Janis Joplin
Janis Joplin's Gear
Despite not being owned by Joplin, it was used as her vocal mic for the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, as is visible in this image of Joplin performing there. As discussed in this video by Shure Creators (an official Shure YouTube channel), the McCune Audio company had loaned several microphones to the festival, including a number of SM56s.
Janis Joplin used the 1969 Gibson Hummingbird Acoustic Guitar to record her famous hit "Me and Bobby McGee." After Janis died in 1970, it was given to her old bandmate, Sam Andrew. Andrew died in 2015, and his wife auctioned it off through Heritage Auctions. It sold for $50,000.
A photograph on Instagram by therockarchive, captioned "Janis Joplin playing guitar in her San Francisco apartment (1967)" and taken by Steve Schapiro, shows Janis Joplin using a Gibson J-45.
