John talks about his MXR pedals in this November 1986 issue of Guitarist Magazine. "All the effects are MXR except the Overdrive. I use an MXR rack compressor/limiter which isn't here at the moment. It's so good that our sound guy knicked it and put it on the PA and I haven't got it back yet! Two Flangers, so I can have them at two different settings..."

According to this scanned copy of the publication The Armoury Show, John is shown as using an "Ibanez SM9 Super Metal" in his setup.

John McGeoch says in this article he uses an Ibanez overdrive pedal that is "basically a glorified fuzzbox;" the OD-850 seems to be the only pedal fitting that description.

In a 1986 article from The International Musician, John McGeoch is noted for using an MXR compressor, specifically the MXR Custom Shop CSP028 Vintage Dyna Comp.
