Peter Hook's Gear
"Around the time of recording Closer was when I bought probably two of the most important things I’ve ever owned in terms of my sound – a Shergold Marathon 6-string bass and an Electro-Harmonix Clone Theory pedal. This was really when I started to shape my sound and develop my own styles of playing." - Peter Hook for PedalsandEffects.com
Peter Hook stated in an interview w/ Bass Guitar Magazine that “One of the strange things is that having such a distinctive style doesn’t lend itself to much experimentation. I’m always looking to see if anyone could make a better guitar than the Yamaha BB1200S. They’ve never done it yet, to my mind."

In an article from Gibson.com Peter Hook tells Michael Leonard "The first bass I really invested in was a Gibson EB-0. I love the sound of Gibson basses, but I needed a double-octave scale for my style of playing. So I had to get a copy of an EB-2 made by [U.K. guitar maker] Chris Eccleshall."

... He said to me when we were in the studio doing Closer “what you need is the best fucking bass amp in the world and you need to be as loud as fuck,” so he went out and showed me an Alembic FB2 preamp into an Amcron (Crown) DC300A...

This was Hook's main chorus during most of his carrer. He used it with joy division on the album "Closer" and for the single "Love will tear us apart", and with new order throught the 80's. The effect has been one of the trademarks of Hooky's sound. It was usually rackmounted along with his rack units (As can be seen on this 1981 concert at 3:00) and it was always on (or at least most of the time).

Hook started out on a "terrible" EKO bass copy before moving to a "terrible" Rickenbacker bass copy. He experimented next with a Gibson EB-2 hollow body bass, but ultimately ditched it because of the medium neck – he required a double octave.

"Martin Hannett built a set-up for me, an Alembic valve/stereo preamp going into a stereo Amtron DC300A. Although it was Peter Hooksolid-state, the Amtron gave a really warm bottom-end but also made the higher notes really bite."

I had a 100-watt Marshall Lead Amp, wired for bass. I don’t know what the difference is – something to do with the frequencies – but it had a fantastic, rich, warm sound, especially when you played high. All the songs on Unknown Pleasures were written and played on it; it sounded great. It used to sing to me, that amp: such sweet distortion. It was wonderful.
