John Monkman's Gear
On Instagram in May 2025, John Monkman shares a video clip of him playing on his Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 Drum Machine. He captions the post:
Jamming on the @ericasynths Perkons drum machine and stumbled into these wild, almost ring-mod FM sounds 🤖 Been pouring into this track for the past couple weeks and it’s getting close. Sharing the process here because maybe it sparks something for someone else too.
In this Instagram video posted by John Monkman April 2025, he's playing on his UDO Audio Super 6 synth:
Laying down some wild sounds from the UDO Super 6 today - kind of reminded me of Doctor Who with that single note flipping through octaves using the pitch knob. Ended up using most of this pass… cut a few bits out bit by bit, but pulled it together. It’s pretty rough and ready, but I like that - it’s got a different kind of bottom end than I’d usually go for. Might end up somewhere else, who knows - but right now, I’m enjoying the vibe. What do you think?
In this Instagram video John Monkman shows how he makes a bass sound on his Moog Minimoog Voyager Electric Blue Edition. One of his hashtags in the post is actually #moogvoyagerelectricblue which confirms this edition of the synth. He captions the post:
It’s been a week since “Vader” hit, and I want to give you a quick look into how those gnarly bass sounds came to life ⚡️👊
If you’ve followed my music, you know these heavy bass sounds are a staple. You’d think they’d get old by now, but there’s always a small adjustment—a shift in harmonics, a new texture—that keeps them fresh.
It’s all about that relentless pursuit of something that feels raw and new.
The full track’s up for streaming and download in the bio. Dive in and let the bass do the talking.
Thanks for the love - let’s keep pushing forward. 👊
From a comment thread on a post where he's playing his Moog Voyager, someone asks:
Are you utilizing any pedals or other boxes to filter the Moog through? Asking as a new (soon to be) Voyager owner.
To which John replies:
think this may have been growing through a but of Valhalla verb and maybe an H-delay on a send in ablation.. but not much
