Mike Portnoy's Drum Sets
The picture shows Mike behind his "Mirage Monster", which he used back in 2007/2008.
Shown using a Tama Starclassic Maple kit in this Drumeo video and currently uses it on tour. It has a purple-fade-to-white finish and is named the "Dream Monster". It has 20 shells with 4 octobans 6" wide, 18-22" left to right, 3 rack toms (8"x7", 10"x8". 12"x9"), 2 floor toms (16"x16" and 14"x5"), 2 kick drums (both 22"x18") and his signature Melody Master Snare (14"x5.5") on the left side of his kit. On his right he has 3 rack toms (6"x5", 8"x6", 10"x"7), 2 floor toms (14"x14" and 16"x16"), 1 kick drum (20"x18"), a gong drum (20"x12") and another one of his signature Melody Master snares (12"x5").
Mike Portnoy used a Tama Starclassic Bubinga kit during the creation of Black Clouds and Silver Linings, and on the albums tour. He has also used this kit in some of his other projects.
The picture shows Mike's kit from 2000 tour, which featured 6 octobans. Mike has said they are his favourite drums, so he tries to have them always on his kits.
During the DVD commentary for Live at Tokyo, Mike points out that the kit being used for the show is his first professional one, a Tama Imperialstar. Given the time period, it would've been made in Japan and of notably higher quality than the current production line, but still an economical kit given the history.
In this YouTube video by LoudWire at 1:55, you can see First Act written on the bass drum head. Throughout the video, he is playing the limited edition Pokemon wrap. Much to his chagrin, he is playing with orange star cymbals (he really wanted the blue ones).
