I like the tightness of the active pickups, but need a lot of personality. I tried a few different pickups and decided to go with the DiMarzio D Activator pickups. They have the tightness of active pickups, but the personality of passive pickups.
Richard, in an interview in 2008, says he began to use DiMarzio D-Activator pickups. Although it was possibly a brief stint, as he's still seen using EMG pickups both live and in the studio.
In this interview at 3:29, Richard claims his ESP 901, which was the original guitar he used for the first 2 Rammstein albums, had an "SH-4" pickup, most likely referencing the Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB.
In the YouTube video "Rammstein - Du hast (Live in Russia Trailer, Multicam By Vinz)," Richard Zven Kruspe is shown using an EMG 81 Red Active Humbucker Pickup in his ESP E-II RZK-I Burnt guitar.
Richard is a part of EMG's artist roster, and can be seen using EMG pickups since the late-1990s when he began using his ESP KH-2.
Richard Zven Kruspe equips his guitars, including his signature models, with the Floyd Rose Non-Fine Tuner tremolo system, as shown in a post by RZK Audio on Facebook. While he may not frequently use the tremolo, it remains a standard feature on his instruments.
