Robert Ackroyd mentions his journey into jazz guitars began with a Gibson ES-335, specifically transitioning from an Epiphone Dot. This transition is part of his exploration for the ideal Jazzmaster guitar. The accompanying image on Imgur shows Ackroyd with the ES-335, illustrating his connection to this iconic instrument.

"The shallow hollowbody provokes just the right amount of malleable, almost three-dimensional, feedback which I tend to utilize as an affected music bed for many of our songs." - Robert Ackroyd.

"Gibson 335s, 345s and 355s are the only guitars I feel entirely confident playing. I love the natural warmth and bell-like tone that they produce." - Robert Ackroyd.

"To coincide with the supporting tour for the band’s upcoming May 29 album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, Ackroyd selected a new custom-modified American Vintage Jazzmaster."

Modifications include:

  • Custom hand-wound pickups made by Fender Master Builder Dennis Galuszka

"The ones that are in the Jazzmaster now have that warm, rounded bell tone. It’s so clean straightaway, and they react incredibly well with the pedals and the E-bow, as well. Playing it through a Hot Rod DeVille really suits the guitar. You can get that lovely rhythm sound and then dig in for that great bite."

  • A Johnny Marr Jaguar bridge

  • Shell Pink relic finish

"The matching headstock was a dream to have. Fender put out a reissue of the ’65 Jazzmaster with a matching headstock and I was after that. It looks incredible, so we did something a little more personal. I gave [Florence Welch] the option of baby blue or powder pink, and pink won out. It’s just trying to play a guitar that no one else has."
