Rupert Turner's Gear
This is a video by Laney Amplification called Laney Live - Rupert Turner from Palace and his Lionheart L20T-212. It was uploaded on February 26, 2019.
This video is about Rupert Turner from Palace and his Laney Lionheart L20T-212 guitar amplifier. Rupert talks about his tour manager had some Laney amps and they tried this one and it was exactly what he was looking for, gave him more of a "clean, driven tone" that his other amp didn't quite accomplish. He describes the sound as being more beefy and tightened up some washiness. He had found it hard to previously find a clean yet powerful sound that doesn't break up too quickly.
Being that Palace is a "reverb-obsessed" band, Rupert also talks about the digital reverb on the amplifier, and how it is very good at adding a subtle amount of reverb to his sound (being digital it's separate from the preamp).
Rupert says he was surprised that it was only a 20W amp, expecting to be more like 50W considering how powerful it sounds. He talks about the two different speakers in the amplifier, and how they allow him to get a variety of different tones when recording, the vintage-y side being his favorite.
He sets the Tone knob at 11 o'clock, and mentions the EQ is very responsive to brighten or darken the sound. He uses humbucker guitars, and it helps to be able to brighten the sound of the amp using the EQ.

It's like a preamp, based on the 60s TV gear I think, sounds really good, it's really fizzy...
In the video Palace's Rupert Tuner - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 468, Rupert Tuner details his pedalboard, and at 3:30 he talks about his Benson Preamp:
It's a bit smoother, it's very versatile, I use it for kind of like a clean-ish gain, slightly dirty...
In the video Palace's Rupert Tuner - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 468, Rupert Tuner details his pedalboard, and at 3:40 he talks about his Strymon Deco Tape Saturation & Doubletracker pedal:
...just a clean boost. Also I can use it as a phaser or delay. Kind of based on a double tape tracker thing. So you can put the tapes out of sync with each other, that's the idea. So you get saturation and boost and the other tape speed you can change it...
In the video Palace's Rupert Tuner - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 468, Rupert Tuner details his pedalboard, and at 4:15 he shows his TC Electronic Shaker Mini Vibrato:
...Just kind of a modulation thing which I've had forever...
In the video Palace's Rupert Tuner - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 468, Rupert Tuner details his pedalboard, and at 4:25 he shows his Strymon TimeLine, calling it an "infinite delay machine." Then I have a looper, attached to that [Strymon TimeLine], so I can make live loops...
In the video Palace's Rupert Tuner - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 468, Rupert Tuner details his pedalboard, and at 4:35 he shows his Red Panda Tensor:
It's like a micro-looper / pitch shifter, and it's got this really cool speed effect [tweaks top left knob]... you can do tape stops, which we do in the show...
In the video Palace's Rupert Tuner - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 468, Rupert Tuner details his pedalboard, and at 4:51 he shows his Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Nano and talks about how it's his most important pedal for Palace's sound:
...Holy Grail at the end, which is just always on. Reverb, you know, Holy Grail they call it for a reason. The most important pedal is probably the Holy Grail. I think that was the first pedal we got for the band. That and the TimeLine delay are probably the main ones... the Holy Grail is probably the one. I use the amp reverb just a little bit as well, you've got real spring in there, sounds amazing.
In the video Palace's Rupert Tuner - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 468, at 6:44 Rupert Tuner shows that he uses Dunlop Nylon Standard 0.88mm Guitar Picks, calling a "good standard pick" but also saying he's not very picky about his pick selection.
In the video Palace's Rupert Tuner - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 468, around 5:50 Rupert Tuner talks about his Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb amp.
Actually, back home, I don't have one of these. I've got a Fender Deville, but... I can choose what I want so I got the Deluxe Reverb which is much nicer. This one is super treble-y so I've actually taken the treble right off down to about 4, and I have the bass on full which you would think it would sound awful but it kind of works. Then I have a tiny bit or reverb just like 2-3, and [speed and intensity] are off I don't use them.
In the video titled "Palace - Greyhound (Acoustic)" shot during a soundcheck at the Fox Theater, Oakland, Rupert Turner is seen playing a Fender PM-1 Standard Dreadnought acoustic guitar. This performance was part of Palace's 2025 US & Canadian tour.
