Used for World’s Apart & Countin’ On a Miracle during the Rising Tour, and for performances of Point Blank through 2014. According to Steven, “it gives me a little more sustain without sounding too thick or distorted. It almost sounds like an acoustic-electric guitar.” Steve also toured with a Firebird in the 70’s as a backup for his two Strats, and this is possibly that same guitar.

At a pit stop, Sutphin informed us that Van Zandt has two Stratocasters, a '57 and a '67, a Gibson Firebird (a spare which he almost never plays onstage), and two hollow-body 12-string Ovation guitars, with pickups. One of the Ovations and one of the Strats is capo'd. Van Zandt has a Mesa Boogie amp with Electro-Voice speakers. two Roland Jazz Choirs (120) amps, and a 10O-watt Hi Watt brain and cabinet, plus an MXR distortion unit. And yes, he does play it all at 10.
