Stu Mackenzie's Microphones
Stu Mackenzie uses the Electro-Voice 635A microphone, known for its lo-fi and raw sound, as shown in a user-uploaded photo on 1business.
In this photo of Stu's outboard gear, a Sebatron VMP-2000e Mic Preamp can be seen. This comes from an AudioTechnology showcase on King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizzard (http://www.audiotechnology.com.au/wp/index.php/king-gizzards-lo-fi-gut-feeling/)
In this video we can see the SM57 on Stu voice, replacing his classic EV-635. They probably made a change of microphones, because we can see the SM57 in the voices and the EV-635 in the drums hi-hat. At 8:41 we can see de EV-635 on the hi-hat.
“For a pretty long time I’ve used an Electro-voice RE-20,” he said. “It’s the best microphone I own by a pretty long way. The diaphragm is pretty far in it so you don’t really have to use a pop filter. You can get a really in-your-ear, straight-up, true sound. I use one for kick drums too so it’s a good combo mic. It’s got similarities with a Shure SM7, but the SM7s are more bass-heavy, they sound more like modern radio whereas the RE-20 sounds like ’70s radio.”
The 636 is used to mic up one of the guitar amps for flying microtonal banana. Check out the video around 5:35.
AKG was used to mic Michaels snare in the recording of Flying Microtonal Banana. Check out the vid "Peeling the Flying Microtonal Banana" at 05:51 "AKG with foam". Stu isn't saying the exact model (there are about 5 different models) but only the E is using an XLR interface.
At 5:44, Stu refers to this mic as a "Slippery Fish" because of it's shape and how it can fall out of your hands easily. The mic in the video is wrapped in tape to keep a better grip.
In the video at 5:46, Stu Mackenzie can be seen using a Sennheiser MD 421-N microphone on the snare drum during a performance of "Slippery Fish" from the "Flying Microtonal Banana" album.
Throughout the 2022 KEXP session multiple members of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard including Stu Mackenzie can be seen using Shure Beta 57a dynamic microphones, some of the microphones are missing the iconic blue shock ring that is standard on Shure Beta microphones.
Stu Mackenzie can also be seen using the Shure Beta 57a on several other instances of their North America 2022 tour - including throughout the entirety of the following footage of Bonnaroo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbTBVZuTq4k&t=1844s
In the bands “Making of Omnium Gatherum” youtube video, you can see Stu Mackenzie using an SM7B throughout the recording process. It first appears around 2:00 in.
In a photo published in a rig rundown article by Mixdown Mag on May 31, 2024, the Sebatron VMP-4000e 4-Channel Tube Mic Preamp is visible on the right, on top of the desk where Stu Mackenzie is working.
