Electro-Voice: 635A dynamic mic | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production.

tapeop.com

The Electro-Voice 635A microphone proves to be a hidden gem for those seeking a versatile, affordable, and durable option. Its omnidirectional nature and robust build make it ideal for capturing ambient sound in challenging environments, a nod to its broadcast origins. The sound is smooth, reminiscent of a ribbon mic, and it avoids proximity effect issues, making it a great choice for room mics or guitar cabinets. However, it can be a bit boxy when used for close mic’ing on snares. Despite this, its ability to deliver vintage-sounding results, particularly on acoustic instruments and vocals when paired with brighter mics, makes it a valuable addition to any studio. Overall, the 635A is a surprisingly effective and budget-friendly tool, often found at a bargain.

you see these being held by singers in old 70s TV performance clips...

I got mine from a friend because I remembered seeing Bowie holding one when he sang 'little drummer boy' with Bing Crosby....

a passable little handheld dynamic suitable for lots of applications where you don't need or want wide bandwidth and dynamics... but not spectacular on guitar speakers.

Great Lo-Fi mic

This is a great microphone if you are recording Lo-Fi vocals. The downside is you have to kiss the mic to get a balanced-volume recording.

I have one of these SOMEWHERE! My buddy got it at a yardsale for like 5 bucks and gave it to me after we used it to add some color to a set of demos for his band. I wonder where it got to. Its such a skronky little dynamic, seeing it here is making me wanna record something with it!

In this performance the entire band is seen using the EV 635a microphone for vocals (and harmonica).

This took place in 2015 in Seattle, USA.

The EV 635a is a field journalism microphone. Because of this it has a unique sound that works well for lo-fi recordings.

Used during the Muscle Shoals sessions as a hi-hat mic, as stated by mix engineer Jimmy Johnson in this September 21, 2018 ProSoundWeb interview.

Then I had a hi-hat mic, which I think was another (EV) RE-15, though it could have been a little (EV) 635A—that remains in question. The RE15 was a better mic, had more response. We avoided using the 635A unless we had to. Actually, if not the RE15 it might have been a (Shure) SM57, more likely than the 635A.
