The Death of the Electric Guitar
In all fairness, I have not personally Googled the term "Electric Guitar" in my life. With the advent and subsequent rise of site such as Equipboard, and sites like reverb and in no small part, eBay, there is a brand (and in general, product) awareness that has become prevalent dismissing the need for the generic searching google provides.
The fears over the death of the electric guitar while trying to keep a view from a guitarist point of view without repeating the article above ad nauseum, is a bit simpler.
1) There has been a shift in musical trends. Undeniable. This does not mean a death... a downturn yes as two finger typists can release music on the train on the way to go grab a coffee, but the ability and love of playing music on a tangible instrument is still alive and well.
2) Build qualities vs price makes many new purchases a poor investment. The BIG BRAND companies have dilluted the gene pool so much with their budget varieties that they have sullied their own names when people associate them with cheaper guitars. To combat this, the rise of the Boutique guitar has come along with sounds and build qualities that the big names are no longer able to compete with... had this occured at the birth of the electric guitar, the innovators would have carried different names and the future would have been froever changed.
However, as the Big names command still inflated prices for products which have not challenged innovation and whose build qualities have been somewhat sacrificed, the Boutique builders withtheir smaller producions, better quality parts and dedicated workmanship OBVIOUSLY have to charge more than the industry standards that they have surpassed.
3) People prefer the older guitars. Back in my day......
This old addage plays true yet again. We grew up with household names and when we buy new, the quality is not like we remember. So we seek out the old, the dusty the forgotten and even the greats once owned by the greats. We pay for the old... so NEW sales decrease... spiking fears for the death of the electric guitar. And.... with the rise of the Mega Hoarders (who display their collections in museums.... what a waste), deny the honest player (with a love of the instruments) a chance to own some of the quality that we grew up loving.
Electric Guitar is not dying. People spending money on overpriced, poorer quality, new electric guitars is. That is the real story... and the sooner the Big names realise this, the better their continued successes in the industry will be.

In an effort to simplify, we overlook colour in the item adds. You can add pics of your actual items in the GEAR PORN section.
Keep posting.

I recall marginal and minimal success from whites. Shouldn't rule out Mexican.

The action on my Strat was too low, so I adjusted it and set it all back up, now when I play, it feels like my (perfectly or at least relatively) round strings are twisted sideways on my guitar and I am playing them on their edges.
Maybe I have developed Manipulo Digit Dextero Hypersensitivity, or I need to ease up on the painkillers for a bit.

this song's mixing and mastering breakdown
I bought a country guitar on Friday and it didn't play any country songs, so I took it back to the store on Monday.
I hope we can all see the ridiculousness of this statement.
Having all of the equipment in the world does not write a song.
Think of music like another of the arts - drawing.
Instruments are the pencils you draw your music with.
The DAW is the sketch pad or canvas you draw your music on to.
The interface is the easel or writing desk. Without it, drawing the music that everyone can see is messy and clumsy. It can still be done, but the quality could be better.
VST effects and instruments are the colours you use and the tools to shade and add depth to your music.
None of your art supplies can draw a tree. But if you can draw, art supplies HELP.
It doesn't matter what brand of pencils, which canvas, which writing desk, or which paints or colours you use if you cannot draw a tree. You need to draw the tree yourself, using whatever tools you have.
But if you grew up as a kid drawing racecars and spaceships, buying a green pencil won't make you be able to draw a tree.

Jam with people via MIDI over Internet...
Even allows vocals from what I saw. The only concern I have (and I know it is primitive thinking) is that all of your sessions... be they public or private are stated as being recorded and available for download...
What costs are here, and because we are then downloading from this site, are we, in effect, agreeing that whatever we supply to this platform becomes THEIR intellectual property, and we become end product users of THEIR songs?
Suspicions abound, and I know my musical playing and opinions are not high theft risk, But i still happily entertain the ideal that MY ideas are MINE and I share with who i choose.
I will look into it a bit further, but this got the ol' spider senses tingling...

If you are fairly happy with your sound, I would recommend an eq as a boost. Not any drive in it, but with tweaked eq any levels above flat will increase volume, while the level control will push further. I have seriously leaned on an eq for years simply to do this - for expressive sections or solos, and recently added the spark and the soul food to try and free up the eq's for another purpose. I will be honest, I do not like the Soul Food much so far and have not given it too much attention, i find its tones thin and a bit shrill so far, disappointing straight out of the box to the point i almost put it back in the box, which is why i am using it as a boost... Maybe i will dial in a better tone somewhere. and if the eq doesnt do the job, just use it as a shaper to grab your #2 tones

Feet and inches is Imperial… Centimetres and metres is metric. What do you call them?

Jam with people via MIDI over Internet...
Couldn't we Skype with our DAW recording and plug the Skype feed directly into an input jack on our interface and record as we go?

here in america we don't like to call it Imperial... we have this thing about the royal family
Need to know what you call them.....

In defence of both bands, they wrote the song together when they shared a tour.

That would have been handy for me! Forgive my talking metric, just taking the time to convert to Imperial currently seems like too much effort…
I built my portable unit ready to slide into a cabinet when I eventually build it. Unit is made of 120cm wide shelves, for 120cm wide cupboard. PROBLEM: Shelves actually measure 121cm wide. Today is pull apart, cut diwn to size and rebuild day also raising shelf height to be able to reach keyboard program buttons without having to pull whole keyboard out each time.

ATTEMPTING TO RESPOND TO ORIGINAL POST!!!!
I have opted to custom build my own studio furniture. This way it meets my exact needs. While only portable at the moment, my "Porta-Studio" (name will change if I ever mass produce.. sorry tascam!) has space for a synth or hot swapped midi controller keyboard, or a wireless qwerty and mouse my old drum machine and interface, a small micro shelf behind these for my rack piece of kit, then another shelf for laptop and second computer screen and space on either side for speakers.... all wired into space under the shelf so that the whole unit presents one power cable.
Forgive the clumsy language in this... but saying shelf for keyboard, keyboard and keyboard and shelf for monitors and monitor and additional monitor sounds kinda dumb. Thanks English! Best.Language.Ever.

weird EB thing... when replying to a deleted post, you get a 404 and cannot even copy or cut your response to repost it. I took a screen shot, but cannot post pics on here too fluently. Pretty sure my angle was more at the lower end of scale generic responses... doubt i pioneered too many groundbreaking concepts.

Just a thought: If we advertise auditions at the hotel room, we also get a quick stockpile of "Incidental Gear"....
That's what I like to call "Thinking outside the bathtub".

Now instead of thinking like a frontline worker, let's be rational about this and think like upper management. Why use our own organs when we all have access to bathtubs and ice?

im looking for either a transparent overdrive or boost pedal something to push my tone with out distorting my signal too much for cleaner parts that i need to boost like a solo or build ups in before a big chorus
True. Not a drive. It is a boost pedal. The Soul food is a drive.
It's cool ... I read it.
9yabout 9 years ago
TC electronic spark mini for the right price is a win. No colour at all 0 on the dial is parity and 20db of boost. I also use an ehx soul food as a boost, and a compressor and an eq in the past. colour it in yourself.
