Identifying Kurt's Guitar

Sounds like a challenge James...

When COVID is relaxed enough to travel, gather all your native plants and animals and come on over for a deathmatch! It'll be a decent blue/ fight, we can keep going til your guys are cactused/ stuffed/ defeated. (as long as no one is rooting for anyone... thats's different here too!.. and before you take your jocks/ reg's/ shorts/ boxers/ underpants off... when I say we would be great mates... yep... that's way different here too... it's someone you could hang with/ be friends with/ have a beer with) I reckon my gang will kick your arse/ ass, until its a black and blue colour/ color. We aren't completely uncivilised/ uncivilized, we can sit down for tea/ cuppa... (tea is our evening meal) and scones/ biscuits (down here a biscuit is a cookie or a cracker) beforehand. Bring a bum-bag (fanny-pack)... btw over... while fanny is a butt for you guys, it is a vagina down here... and that brings me to Thongs..... everyone wears thongs to a barbie....(flip flops/ jandals to an outdoor cooking event/ Barbeque)

So if you do come on down, practice speaking australian. As a early years english teacher... the best way to speak aussie is this:

Take the first syllable of ANY word (Yes... any... even if it is only a monosyllabic phoneme), and add -o to the end of that. Sweet!, You've got this shit.

And if anyone else is reading this, i hope youve cottoned on to the fact that aussies speak shit and take the piss. (yep, they probably mean different things too)

Decisions Decisions... Plz Halp!

Argh I was too late.

I was going to suggest disconnecting a wire from the speaker of the pathfinder and then "OH NO... My amp is broken.... What will I play through now???"

Prove it...

it's not interviews, they are purely comments. One youtube clip that neither confirmed nor denied anything in its poor resolution. You know me Jim, not after the glory shot, tried to have a look.

Prove it...

Hi, in trying to help, a Simon Gallup Guild Starfire bass was marked needs improvement. I found several written submits online referring to it, but no photographic evidence. Is written enough to substantiate?

Identifying Kurt's Guitar

Hi, I wasnt attempting comedy. These are all features that I searched for on the quest to try and answer this for you, or to help you FIND the answer.

The P-Bass pickguard was mentioned because it was an identifiable feature not consistant with many stratocaster designs (perhaps Ibanez Blazer series is closest to that pickguard shape, while not being known for single humbuckers).

The position of the input jack was also significant as most cheap copies will follow the stratocaster design and mount to the body. This suggests a company/ factory that is either using telecaster style hardware or is setting itself apart from the rest. Washburn springs to mind.

The cheap tuners were an identifiable trademark of Asian-made guitars, with the pot-metal castings and housings being easily recognised, ruling out most American made instruments.

The body does not appear to be standard sized, it appears small on Cobain. This is another indicator that may assist your search.

I'm glad you mentioned the tremolo bridge. It is another piece to search for, very distinct in its design, not of standard fender/ fender clone design. Look for it specifically in decoding and aiding your search.

Similarly, your observation of a vol/ tone pot was ALMOST useful, but you missed the details. The vol pot is unique, low and wide, possibly bearing an insignia or design, reminiscent of gretsch stylings. Look for knobs of this style to identify a brand of guitar.

This also points to the humbucker, open black and black, not cream or zebra and not covered. Look for this too.

your straight 6 and plastic nut comments were not needed. I think you overdid it with those.

And finally, the right handed comment was because it was not a left handed guitar, so could suggest a cheaper company that did not do lefties. Similarly, Cobain was renowned for smashing black stratocaster style guitars at end of nights. It is reported that many of his finds were pawn shop purchases. The right handed guitar may have been strung for basic playability to get through the song before he put it through a bass drum.

I genuinely hope this expanded set of details helps you in your search. I hope next time, you might take the time to consider your responses when someone is offering assistance, even if it not immediately useful to you. The fact that someone took the time to explicitly help you should not be a point of mockery.

Identifying Kurt's Guitar

Right handed guitar, strung left. P-Bass styled pickguard, edge mounted input jack and cheap entry level tuners. This guitar was probably not destined to survive the night. It appears to be shorter scale than even a mustang. I would lean toward those entry level kiddie guitars, were they in existance, let alone heavy circulation in 1991

Can I please apologise?

I appreciate you taking the time to try and offer solutions.

I misinterpreted your use of words and the "/shrug" comment in the sentence as you doubting my knowledge of my amp. I responded too hotly.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will add them to my troubleshoot list.

That said, a Roland Jazz Chorus with no effects loop... Must be an older amp, like, waaaaaaaaay older, because almost all the JC models I've ever used have had an effects loop. /shrug

I fail to see how this comment could have been construed as helpful.

tech talk question

Taken on board. The big board is not practical. I am working on something for the troubleshoot/ rebuild.

This being said, it has worked in the studio for a long time, It traveled an hour plus for a recording session. This happened in one venue this weekend gone.

I just asked because i wanted advice on the cut off/ fade back. It was an obscure fault that i had not encountered in 35+ years of playing.

tech talk question

Is '83 old enough for you? Roland Jazz Chorus 50. Mono. 12" Plugs on the back are as follows: Phones; Chorus&Vib; Distortion: Reverb (as footswitch jacks) and a Chorus&Vib out. Unless you know something secret about an amp I have owned for over 30 years, then I will stand firm on the fact it doesnt. And my other amp is a Marshall JCM800 2203 100w Lead seies head with 4x12 speaker cabinet. It is a vertical input model that i recall tracing back to an '83 also. Similarly, it does not have an effects loop.

The stripdown has to be my next option. Find what is causing the fault.

Thank you for your help guys.

tech talk question

Neither of my guitar amps have effects loops. Direct is fine. All cables on the board were tested in a rebuild about a month ago with any that failed with a cable tester being replaced. It has been working in this exact configuration for a month (starting from the test and rebuild) in a home environment being used both through a DAW and into an amp rehearsing in lead up to this external site rehearsal. I don't want transit to be the consideration for why it failed but it SHOULD be a factor.

Roland Jazz Chorus. So... no.

6yalmost 6 years ago

tech talk question

Long story short. 1st rehearsal with a band today and lost almost all volume when going through the pedalboard but it faded back up to full volume... several times. Swapped and removed pedals and still did it with one pedal... i had it occur when tried with two different single pedals. Even swapped all leads in the experiment.

I want to blame a power supply as the only constant. anyone ever heard of them fading in and out with volume?

It is very superficial, the ability to do a background colour and maybe to tweak which 3 bits of gear appear under your name... maybe if we had a "desert island" styled box with three bits of gear in it?

COVID-19 - How's everyone doing? Anyone playing more music?

Hi all, Long time no speak, or read or hear... All is good in Australia. I know I kinda missed the boat on Pandemic reporting, but I had to work straight through (school teacher). While I haven't recorded anything new in any way completely, there are about six new songs in the pipes from the last few months. I had a period of self isolation (two days) while test results went away (sinus... not covid, but they needed to test), so I isolated from my wife and daughter and slept on a sofabed in my studio. If I left the room I needed a mask and I ate outside to minimise contact.

IT WAS GREAT!

I went through every guitar and rolled fretboards, dressed frets, lemon oiled a few rosewood boards, adjusted actions, serviced nuts, changed strings, corrected intonations, addressed scratchy pots and switches and removed corrosion from input jacks, put an old japanese Ibanez strat together that has been in pieces for 29 years, cable tested and rewired my pedalboard and put actions in place to get a band working post- isolation. All in two days! Freakin' fabulous.

Glad to hear most of us were able to stay safe.

See you on the pages!

Question on signal chain issue

Look, to each their own of course. I am not actually trying to tell you to put it anywhere. My question was to see if the sound issue goes away when in front of the amp. Think of it as curiousity mixed with troubleshooting.

Question on signal chain issue

Does the hiss still happen when you are running the looper through the front of the amp (between guitar and amp input?)

Questions on "F-Spacing"

F= Fender G=Gibson

Seriously though, F-spacing refers to the widest spacings on full-sized humbucking pickups. For correct string alignment and a balanced output, F-spaced humbuckers should be used in the bridge position on guitars with string spacing at the bridge of 2.1″ or 53mm (or greater).

Comedy attempt: Tubescreamer

In order of release Ibanez have done the TS808, TS9, TS10, TS5 and TS7 (as well as reworked versions of each). With everything that has happened so far this year, 2020 HAS TO BE the year for the TS6!!! What will it do for our signals? What are the mods?

Need help: FCB1010 with Guitar Rig 5

Hi All,

I have an FCB1010 with Eureka chipset (for use with Guitar Rig) but I can find no documentation other than a video on how to communicate between the two. The video has not really helped and I write in hope that someone can explain it clearer. How do I assign CC so that the Software communicates with the Hardware? Thanks in advance.

Whats your keeper guitar/bass?

House on fire? Jazzmaster first. I gave up EVERYTHING to buy that guitar... when I had nothing. Out of my entire collection, this is still my DON'T TOUCH... friends or family inclusive. Sure it's only a '94 MIJ reissue, but that guitar is part of me, my history and what I do. My wife stated if we ever seperate, I can have EVERYTHING else... she is taking the Jazzmaster. (Been together 29 years now...) If I had time in the fire I would go back for my Strat... Maple neck can go flamed maple! Fire still raging? I would go back in, grab my Tele, and FIGHT THE FIRE WITH IT!!!

Extension USB port recommendations?

What is a popular go to device when looking for USB extenders?

My laptop has three ports, which are used by audio interface, hard drive, and mouse… Based on how my setup is. I need to add more inputs for midi controllers drum machines etc. Is there a preferred brand amongst electronic music producers?

Strymon Bluesky vs Walrus descent

I would have said that P&W used the Big Sky, not the BlueSky.

The BlueSky offers some pretty nice sounding reverbs... because pretty nice is what Strymon do. It allows you to shape the tone and delay of your reverb signal and it just makes it sound... pretty nice.

The Walrus adds the octaves and the reverse reverb... plus seperate wet mix and dry mix knobs. A lot more control on this one. But it can get a bit murky, a bit cheesy and a bit stupid sounding... as well as the standard pretty nice settings.

Between BlueSky and Descent.. I choose Descent.

Between Big Sky and Descent... that would be a different question.

Noisy pups

Good solutions.

Sensible solutions.

Other (less plausible) solutions:

  • The sound you hear is the two extra strings gosipping over why you switched from bass.
  • What you are hearing is the sound of ROCK.... waiting to happen.
  • Not enough hand lube. Buy more at guitar shop.
  • Guitars are needy. While a bass is more than happy with a single finger, guitars prefer the whole fist to be neck deep at all times.
  • Do not let go of the guitar. The only reason ever witnessed to let go of guitar, is if you are only a singer, but wear a guitar to increase your stage presence...because you have the personality of a sock... and you somehow think hanging onto it for a bit then SLIDING it around to behind you so you can grab the mic with two hands, will make you seem cooler.... NOPE this faces your noisy guitar (Which you only bought to look cool) directly at an amp (which you also HAD to buy because just buying the guitar seemed a bit pointless, plus you then had to buy cables and picks and a tuner and some other things the guy in the guitar shop told you you absolutely HAD to have if you are a singer that wants a guitar to sling behind you because you are jealous of socks upstaging you... he said some other stuff, but you couldn't make them out because he had his hand over his mouth and was giggling... you presume because he was SO excited that a singer had chosen to go to him when they finally transitioned to guitar)... umm.... lost it a bit there... um.. oh yeah... guitar at amp unprotected.

So, seriously now, in the end, there are two options.

  • Learn to find a way to keep skin in contact with strings to continue grounding the instrument.
  • Learn to live with it.

(Please work on option A).
