This fuzz pedal is a blueprinted version of the old Sola Sound / Colorsound / VOX tonebenders that had three germanium transistors and a TONE knob. These are known as MK-III and MK-IV versions, also known as "thin case" Tone-Benders. The grey one (MK-III) was made in 1973. Some RotoSound and Park fuzz pedals also used this circuit. We own three original versions of these pedals which we studied to make ours. The rare yellow MK-IV model was sent to us from a customer in Germany who LOVED the sound but wanted a smaller, more reliable clone that was made and sounded EXACTLY the same. That led us to the R & D which we used to make our production pedal after we made his custom exact clone.

These fuzz pedals use 3 germanium transistors and have a TONE knob unlike the earlier MKI, MK1.5, and MK-II versions. The tone knob goes from a bassy tone to a trebly tone, it's sort of a "mix" knob in the way it works, it does not just cut highs or lows. I find it best to keep the tone knob low, around 9:00, don't think you need to keep knobs at noon.

The transistors used in the old ones are unmarked so we pulled them out and tested them to find the specifications. Then we checked our stash and found some NOS Mullard germanium transistors which we had been saving for many years that were similar. We made about 100 of these pedals with these NOS transistors. Now, we have a version with two NOS Russian transistors, which I found closest to the originals in sound and even looks, and one of the old Mullards. The Russians sound the same in the MKIV, as they are not critical in that part of the circuit. These first two transistors are in a "Darlington Pair" configuration which gives them very high gain.

FEATURES:

Top Jacks for tight pedalboards Battery power only, battery may last a year of normal use (120 hours of use). Volume increased over the original, for a nice loud fuzz sound that will cut through. Tone knob is reversed to "normal", down for bass, up for treble. Bias trimpot allows setting for different temperatures or different hardness/softness of tones. Clean up is not like a germanium Sun Face so that does not get changed much with a buffer. No problem with buffers after. I get asked about the differences between this and our MKI.5 Sun Bender a lot. The MK1.5 is more raw and 1960s sounding, with a BIAS knob, and gets nice cleaner sounds too. The MKIV is more saturated and 1970s sounding, and has a tone control that can go from thick to thin and trebly.

It was originally released as a special limited run item back in 2010 and demand was so high that we decided to reintroduce it back into our line on a semi-permanent basis. It’s a germanium/silicon hybrid muff style fuzz (based on the old green russian muff) with massive amounts of volume on tap and smooth amp-like sustain. It has a tighter, cleaner sound than most muff’s which makes it more cutting and discernible in a band setting. The shift control changes the frequency response of the tone control, mainly on the treble side (but takes out the mud on the bass side). Clockwise scoops the mids and counterclockwise enhances the mids. When the shift control is set dead centre it has roughly the same frequency response as the original 3 knob hoof (almost flat). Tone Reaper Description: The Tone Reaper is a vintage style fuzz device based on the "3 knob” bender. It’s a silicon/germanium hybrid capable of producing a wide range of tones from every bender era with careful tweaking of the tone and fuzz controls. The 69 Vibe is a recreation of the classic watery effect made famous in the late 60’s and early 70’s by players like Hendrix, Trower and Gilmour. Designed in 1968 by Japanese company Shin-ei to replicate the doppler effect or rotating speaker, this pedal ended up with a sound like no other. After purchasing one of the early units when I was a kid it was always a dream to have a pedal board friendly unit I could use that sounded like the originals ….. I think I’ve done it, but you be the judge.

The Klinger MK2 is my recreation of the classic Tonebender MK2 from 67. This 3 transistor circuit is seen as the classic Bender sound found on many records and stages throughout the 60’s and 70’s. With its distinctive fuzz tone and loads of sustain my version captures the mojo of the originals in a smaller pedal board friendly box.

It’s simple layout with the extra mode switch allows for easy and effective control over fuzz tones. The hi and low gain (MK2 – MK1.5) switch adds extra full germanium fuzz tone options. I use the same circuit found in the original to stay true to the tones and vibe of the old units. Extra care has been taken to match and tune each unit for the ultimate bender MK2 experience.

This pedal rides the lines between vintage overdrive and fuzz. Never over the top on its own but when added to a Slightly driven tube amp it really is a tone to behold.

This pedal uses 2 Vintage epoxy dot silicon transistors plus a few small mods to thicken the bottom end when the tone is rolled back.

Based on the classic MK1 Bender fuzz design of the mid 60’s. This sound can be found on the albums of Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton in the mid-60’s then later made famous by Mick Ronson – guitarist for David Bowie. This pedal gives you plenty of sustain, splat and crazy fuzz character to impress even the hardest of fuzz critics.The addition of the Tone, Gate and Cut controls gives the player full control of the character, feel and colour without taking away the classic fuzz sound found in the original design.The tone control is a simple addition to help control the bite of the fuzz with high headroom amplifiers. The gate control is part of the improved bias section of the pedal. Similar to the switch on my classic MK1 It will allow you to dial in the amount of splatter as the notes die out. The Original MK1’s were very gated so if you’re going for that sound, run the gate control low. The cut control is a switch that allows you to get the sounds found on the Zonk and FZ-1 style pedals. This control when used with the tone and gate will transform the pedal into a different beast. Using the Gate and Attack control together you can find a balance of clean up using the guitar volume control and tame any hiss. Start with both Attack and Gate at 12 o’clock and dial from there. This also can come in handy with temperature changes that the germanium transistors are sensitive too. This pedal uses a positively grounded case and it needs to be run from an isolated power supply, or battery. Not suitable for a daisy-chain power supply.

Voicing switch:

Mid: Effective at boosting for more drive, without the bottom end getting too flabby. Bright: Slightly fuller than a classic treble booster. Full Cream: Extra body, and fat tone. GE / SI Silicon mode has a little more gain and aggression than Germanium, as well as lower noise levels.

N.B. for purity of design, this pedal uses a positively grounded case. As such, it needs to be run from an isolated power supply, or battery. IE this pedal may not be suitable for a daisy-chain power supply. Batteries are not necessarily preferred.

REVERB

The Reverb knob controls the intensity/mix of reverb added to the input feeding the modulation circuit. It is a classic Silverface amp style reverb with a static decay time.

GRAIN

Increasing the Grain amount adds an analog tubelike pre-saturation to the effect. At max it boosts/compresses the level slightly adding a soft overdrive.

PHASE

Adjusting the Phase knob from its center position will change the duration of the 'on time' either towards the beginning or end of the wave cycle resulting in the modulation 'pulse' feeling more asymetrical or staccato.

BOOST

Add or Cut the output Level by +- 4db

TAP

Manually set Tempo with by Tapping the Footswitch. Set to 1:1 Tempo.

A sustained hold on the Tap switch activates the Speed multiplier which, while depressed, ramps the speed up to a multiple of the current settting. At slower modulation speeds the ramp time is relatively slow, emulating a mechanical rotary speaker changing speed.

Colortone Lo-Fi Delay is a grainy lo-fi, old-school analog-sounding delay with additional momentary oscillation feedback switching options. Controls include DelayTime, Regen, Feedback, Mix and a ‘Splash’ footswitch to momentarily send the delay into a predetermined amount of regenerative feedback.

Optionally the pedal can be in quiet '+' mode where a delay is only activated when the momentary 'Splash' footswitch is depressed. Great for adding dub style accents to certain stabs or phrases.

‘+’ mode has the Delay in silent operation mode and delays are only activated when the momentary Splash footswitch is depressed. Can be used for Dub style accents, Splashes of ambient delay or adding momentary washes of delay.

Colortone’s Optical Tremolo is a wave shapeable analog tremolo effect pedal.

With an optical photoresistor at its core the Optical Tremolo produces a vibrant modulation pulse, slightly asymmetrical in shape, adding a smooth organic vintage character to the effect.

The ‘shape’ control lets you adjust the shape of the modulation curve from a smooth classic sine wave through to a square wave chop tremolo style effect.

At a mild drive setting the PARASITE can act as an ‘always on’ pre-amp style device adding a light organic textural sparkle to your clean sound.

With larger amounts of drive you’ll start feeling the creamy tubelike compression, tonal breakup and harmonic complexity of a driven tube amp.
