About
Art Brut is an English rock band known for their energetic blend of punk rock, indie rock, and dance-punk. Formed in London in 2003, the group was initially comprised of Eddie Argos (vocals), Chris Chinchilla (guitar), Ian Catskilkin (guitar), Frederica Feedback (bass), and Mikey Breyer (drums). Over time, guitarist Chris Chinchilla was replaced by Jasper Future. Art Brut's music is characterized by Eddie Argos' unique spoken-sung vocal style and witty, observational lyrics that touch on themes of pop culture and everyday life. Their sound and aesthetic draw comparisons to bands like Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party, though Art Brut has carved out their own niche with a distinctive, raw approach to rock music. They gained prominence with their debut album Bang Bang Rock & Roll and have continued to be influential figures in the British indie rock scene.
How to Sound Like Art Brut
Art Brut's sound is defined by its raw, energetic character, combining punchy, distorted guitar riffs and driving, rhythmic bass lines. The use of clean, cutting guitar tones mixed with occasional fuzz and overdrive gives their music an immediate, gritty texture. Vocally, Eddie Argos' delivery is more akin to storytelling, providing both a rhythmic and melodic element that stands out against the backdrop of propulsive drums. The band's arrangements often employ simple yet effective chord progressions and dynamic shifts to maintain a vibrant energy throughout their tracks. To capture Art Brut's sound, musicians might focus on using solid-state or tube amplifiers that can handle both clean and overdriven settings, coupled with pedals for distortion and modulation effects to add texture and depth to the guitar work. Overall, the essence of Art Brut's music lies in its direct, unpolished sound and the engaging narrative style of its vocals.
