About

Boris is a genre-defying Japanese band known for their eclectic fusion of rock, metal, and experimental sounds. Formed in the early '90s, the trio originally comprised Wata (guitar, vocals), Takeshi (bass, guitar, vocals), and Atsuo (drums, vocals). They have become cult favorites for their ability to seamlessly blend genres like doom metal, punk, shoegaze, and psychedelic rock, taking their name from a song by the Melvins. Boris is celebrated for their ambitious conceptual projects and collaborations, exploring everything from minimalist drone to noise-infused rock.

How to Sound Like Boris

To emulate Boris's dynamic and versatile sound, one must embrace both heaviness and intricacy. Their music often contrasts crushing, downtuned riffs with ethereal textures, creating a vast sonic landscape. Key to achieving their aggressive yet atmospheric tone are fuzz and distortion pedals, such as the Boss DS-1, which Wata utilizes to drive her Gibson Les Paul Custom through powerful Orange amplifiers. For the ambient layers and feedback-heavy moments, a Boss RE-20 Space Echo provides the necessary depth and delay, allowing for the experimental edge that defines much of Boris's work.
