About

Joan of Arc is a boundary-pushing indie rock band originating from Chicago, formed in the wake of the emocore outfit Cap'n Jazz's dissolution in 1995. The group is primarily the brainchild of Tim Kinsella (vocals, guitar), the only consistent member throughout their evolving lineup. Known for their eclectic blend of emo, post-hardcore, and experimental indie rock, the band explored a wide sonic palette, incorporating elements from math rock to post-rock. Over the years, the lineup featured notable musicians like Mike Kinsella (drums), Sam Zurick (bass), Jeremy Boyle (keyboards, guitar), and Erik Bocek (guitar), each contributing to the band's ever-changing soundscapes and artistic direction.

How to Sound Like Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc's sound is characterized by its experimental and atmospheric nature, often diverging from traditional song structures to incorporate ambient textures, noise elements, and layered instrumentals. The band achieves its complex sound through a mix of analog and digital means, utilizing gear like the Keeley Caverns V2 for lush delay effects and the Keeley Oxblood Overdrive V2 for dynamic overdrive tones. Guitars such as the Fender Telecaster and Gibson Hummingbird are staples in their setup, providing both the clean, articulate tones and the warm, resonant sounds that underpin their music. Their compositions often feature intricate guitar work and unconventional rhythms, creating a sound that is simultaneously intimate and expansive, challenging listeners to engage with their music on multiple levels.
