About

Crazy Horse is an American rock band renowned for their raw, unpolished sound and long-standing collaboration with Neil Young. Originating in Los Angeles in the late 1960s, the group formed from the remnants of the doo-wop band Danny & the Memories. The core lineup features Danny Whitten (guitar, vocals), Billy Talbot (bass), and Ralph Molina (drums). Known for their synergy with Young, Crazy Horse has been pivotal in defining genres like rock, country rock, and folk rock, often incorporating elements of psychedelic and roots rock into their music. Although the band has ventured into their own projects, they are most celebrated for their powerful contributions to Young's albums, such as Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.

How to Sound Like Crazy Horse

Crazy Horse's sound is characterized by its gritty and earthy vibe, often leaning into a garage rock aesthetic that is both melodic and aggressive. Their music typically features distorted, overdriven guitar tones that are both raw and expressive. Neil Young's use of the Old Black Gibson '53 Les Paul, paired with the Fender 'Wide Panel Tweed' Deluxe 5C3, brings a warm, vintage crunch to their sound, enhancing the band's robust and energetic performances. The rhythm section, driven by Talbot's steady bass and Molina's dynamic drumming, provides a solid yet fluid foundation, allowing the guitar work to shine. This combination of gritty guitar riffs and a tight, driving rhythm section captures the essence of their rock-infused style, making their music both timeless and influential.
