About
L7 is a groundbreaking American rock band that emerged from Los Angeles in 1985, known for their fiery blend of grunge, punk, and alternative rock. The band was founded by Suzi Gardner (guitar, vocals) and Donita Sparks (guitar, vocals), later joined by Jennifer Finch (bass, vocals) and Dee Plakas (drums, vocals). L7's music is characterized by its raw energy, rebellious spirit, and no-nonsense attitude, often associated with the riot grrrl and queercore movements. With a sound that draws from both the blistering metal of Motörhead and the straightforward punk of the Ramones, L7 made significant waves in the '90s rock scene with albums like Bricks Are Heavy, which includes the hit single "Pretend We're Dead".
How to Sound Like L7
L7's sound is fiercely aggressive, marked by crunchy, overdriven guitar riffs and powerful, chugging rhythms. Their sonic character thrives on a gritty edge, with distortion and fuzz pedals playing a pivotal role. Donita Sparks’ use of the Maestro Fuzz-Tone and Boss HM-3 Hyper Metal pedals adds a thick, saturated layer to their music, while Suzi Gardner's Pro Co RAT delivers a biting, jagged tone. The gritty, unpolished guitar sound is further enhanced by the robust output from a Fender Bassman AB165 Amp, providing a raw, vintage feel. L7's music is a blend of visceral power and sheer attitude, with driving bass lines and relentless drumming underpinning their fierce guitar work, creating an electrifying and rebellious atmosphere.
