About

Savoy Brown is a seminal English blues rock band that emerged from the vibrant British blues scene in 1965. Founded by the talented guitarist and songwriter Kim Simmonds, the group became known for their dynamic blend of electric blues, blues rock, and hard rock. Although the lineup has seen numerous changes over the years, Simmonds remained the driving force until his passing in 2022. The band's early years featured notable musicians such as vocalist Chris Youlden, guitarist Dave Peverett, bassist Tony Stevens, and drummer Roger Earl. Savoy Brown's music is rooted in the blues tradition, drawing inspiration from the electric Chicago and Delta blues styles, while also incorporating elements of psychedelic rock and roadhouse boogie.

How to Sound Like Savoy Brown

Savoy Brown's sound is characterized by its raw and energetic delivery, with a focus on gritty guitar riffs and blues-infused rock rhythms. The band often employed overdriven, tube-driven amplifiers to achieve their powerful, vintage tone. Guitars like the Gibson Les Paul Goldtop and Fender Stratocaster were staples in their arsenal, providing the warm, sustaining sound that defined many of their solos. The use of effects like the Maestro Echoplex added depth and texture, enhancing the emotional weight of their performances. Drums and bass deliver a driving, rhythmically tight foundation, which allows the guitar work to shine, creating a sound that is both intense and deeply rooted in blues tradition. For musicians looking to emulate Savoy Brown's style, focusing on dynamic interaction between bluesy guitar leads and a robust rhythmic section is key.
