About

Thingy is an inventive indie rock band with roots in the math rock genre, hailing from the vibrant San Diego music scene. The group emerged after the dissolution of Heavy Vegetable, featuring key members Rob Crow (vocals, guitar) and Eléa Tenuta (vocals), along with Jason Soares (bass) and Mario Rubalcaba (drums). Known for their quirky art-pop influences and intricate compositions, Thingy stands out with their engaging and eclectic musical style. Over the years, the lineup has seen changes, with Brent Asbury and Cameron Jones joining the ranks, contributing to the band's dynamic sound.

How to Sound Like Thingy

Thingy's sound is characterized by its intricate, yet melodic guitar work, combined with quirky, rhythmic structures that reflect their math rock influences. The guitar tones are typically warm and textured, achieved through the use of gear like the Gibson Les Paul Custom, known for its rich and creamy sustain. Effects pedals such as the Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler and Boss DS-1 Distortion add layers of complexity, enabling the band to weave between clean and distorted textures seamlessly. The use of a Fender 'Black Panel' Twin Reverb amplifier provides a classic, tube-driven warmth, complementing their vibrant, off-kilter arrangements. Drums offer a dynamic backbone, with a precision that keeps their often unpredictable compositions cohesive and engaging.
