AMEK was a British professional audio manufacturer founded in 1973 in Manchester, England by Graham Langley and Nick Franks. The company built a reputation for large-format analog mixing consoles aimed at recording studios, broadcast facilities, and live sound, including the M1000, Angela, Einstein, Mozart, Rembrandt, Hendrix, and Media 51.
In 1989, AMEK entered into a consultancy arrangement with Rupert Neve, which led to the System 9098 range of outboard equipment and the 9098 series of consoles. The flagship 9098i, released in the late 1990s under the slogan "Artistry in Analogue," is regarded by many engineers as one of the finest-sounding large-format analog consoles ever produced, featuring Neve-designed signal paths, digitally controlled Virtual Dynamics processing, and 5.1 mix capability.
AMEK was acquired by Harman International in 1997 and operated from Trafford Park in Manchester before the brand was retired in 2005 in favor of Harman's Soundcraft and Studer lines. AMEK consoles and outboard continue to circulate on the used market and have been modeled in software form, including Brainworx's bx_console AMEK 9099 plugin.
AMEK has 14 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Mixers, Effects Processors, and Preamps. Their gear is featured by 13 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Rock, and Pop. Notable users include Pharrell Williams, Alex G, and Ty Segall.
