AMS Neve is a British professional audio company based in Burnley, England, specializing in analogue and digital mixing consoles, outboard equipment, and post-production systems. The company was formed in 1992 through the merger of Advanced Music Systems (AMS) with Neve Electronics, the console maker founded by Rupert Neve in 1961 that built the world's first commercial transistor-based mixing console for Philips Studios in London.
The company is best known for the 1073, a Class A transformer-based microphone preamplifier and three-band EQ introduced in 1970 inside the Wessex A88 console, which has become one of the most widely used and imitated preamp designs in recording history. Its product range includes the 1073, 1081, and 500 Series outboard modules, the Genesys and Genesys Black analogue consoles with digital recall, the 8424 and BCM10 small-format desks, the 88RS flagship large-format console, and the DFC3D digital film console used in post-production.
Neve consoles are a fixture in major recording and film studios around the world, with vintage 80-series and 8000-series desks from the 1970s and 1980s still in active use decades after manufacture. Rupert Neve himself left the original company in 1975 and has had no involvement in AMS Neve's designs; he went on to co-found Focusrite and later Rupert Neve Designs.
AMS Neve has 110 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Effects Processors, Preamps, and Mixers. Their gear is featured by 280 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Electronic. Notable users include Neeraj Khajanchi, Paul McCartney, and Daft Punk. Most AMS Neve products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
