Midas is a British manufacturer of professional audio mixing consoles, founded in London in 1970 by Jeff Byers and Charles Brooke. Originally producing solid-state guitar amplifiers as Midas Amplification, the company pivoted to mixing consoles with the PR System modular mixer in 1974. Midas built its reputation in the touring sound world, with early consoles adopted by Clair Brothers Audio on major concert tours.
The company's XL series of large-format analog touring consoles, beginning with the XL launched at the 1986 AES Convention in New York and continuing through the XL2, XL3, and XL4, established Midas as a leading name in live sound. The Heritage series, introduced in 1998 with models including the H1000, H2000, H3000, and H4000, extended that analog legacy. Midas entered the digital era with the flagship XL8 in 2006, followed by the PRO series (PRO3, PRO9) and the VeniceF hybrid console, and more recently the HD96 and M32 / M-series digital consoles.
Following the 1987 acquisition of Midas Audio Systems by Klark Teknik, both brands were acquired in 2009 by Music Group (now Music Tribe). Midas consoles have been used on tours by AC/DC, Metallica, R.E.M., and Depeche Mode, and remain a fixture of front-of-house and monitor positions at large-scale concerts, festivals, and houses of worship.
