Founded by Steve Clayton, who entered the music business in 1966 at age 16 selling guitar chord chart posters out of his van to music stores across the United States, Steve Clayton, Inc. is an American guitar pick and accessories manufacturer based in Talent, Oregon. The company initially operated as a music store in Calabasas, California before relocating to Oregon in the early 1980s and pivoting to manufacturing. Operating out of a 16,000-square-foot factory, Clayton produces picks in a range of proprietary materials including Acetal — engineered to resist the notching that wears down standard picks — and Ultem, known for delivering crisp, bright tones.
Clayton's product line extends beyond picks to include hickory drumsticks, guitar slides (glass, brass, and socket styles), capos, leather and nylon guitar straps, and instrument care products. The company also operates Clayton Custom, a division that pioneered direct-to-consumer custom-printed guitar picks, enabling musicians to order personalized full-color picks in quantities as low as 30 — a first in the industry. Early custom pick clients in the 1990s included Johnny Cash and Ted Nugent, and those original Acetal picks have since become collector's items.
Clayton picks have been used by artists spanning a wide range of genres, including Eric Church, Jack Black of Tenacious D, Gavin Rossdale, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Switchfoot, and James Otto.
Clayton has 24 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Picks & Pick Holders, Slides, and Solid Body Electric Guitars. Their gear is featured by 10 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Metal. Notable users include Jeremy Davis, Taylor York, and Mikey Way.
