Snarling Dogs is an American guitar effects brand that emerged in the mid-1990s, founded by Charlie Stringer of Stringer Industries, a company already active in the guitar strings and accessories business. The pedal line was designed by Kenny Segall and a co-designer, and it quickly became known for its distinctive industrial design — heavy steel enclosures shaped like hot-rod gas pedals, topped with a cartoon dog-face logo whose eyes were drilled through and fitted with LEDs that glowed red when the effect was engaged.
The brand built its reputation almost entirely on wah pedals, including the Super Bawl Whine-O Wah, Black Bawl, Blues Bawls, Fire Bawl, Mold Spore Wah and Wonder Wah, along with the Bootzilla, a wah-and-fuzz combo designed as a signature pedal for bassist Bootsy Collins. A smaller line of Retro stompboxes — overdrive, distortion and tone-shaping units like the Very Tone Dog — rounded out the catalog. Snarling Dogs pedals developed a cult following for their unusual voicings and playful aesthetic, though they also gained a reputation among players for uneven build quality depending on the production run.
After Stringer's death in 1999, the brand changed hands several times, eventually landing with D'Andrea, the New Jersey–based maker of guitar picks and accessories, which holds the Snarling Dogs trademark. Kenny Segall remained involved on the engineering side, and the catalog has continued to circulate through major retailers and the used market, keeping the dog-faced wahs in rotation on pedalboards well beyond their original 1990s run.
