CME, originally founded in 1993 in Beijing as Central Music Company, began as a distributor for international music production brands including Moog, Kurzweil, MOTU, and PreSonus in the Chinese market. After Yamaha established its own Chinese subsidiary in 2005, CME pivoted to developing its own products, focusing on MIDI controllers and wireless MIDI technology. The company reincorporated in Singapore in 2012 as CME PTE. LTD. and distributes products across 56 countries.
CME is a pioneer in wireless MIDI technology, releasing the WIDI-X8 wireless MIDI interface in 2005 and continuing with innovations like the WIDI Master, a Bluetooth MIDI adapter capable of functioning as both a peripheral and central device with ultra-low 3ms latency. The Xkey series of ultra-thin aluminum MIDI keyboards, including the Xkey 25 and the Bluetooth-enabled Xkey Air, gained popularity for their portable, Apple-style industrial design and were carried in Apple retail stores. The company also produces USB MIDI interfaces such as the U6MIDI Pro, H2MIDI Pro, and H12MIDI Pro, catering to musicians with complex hardware MIDI routing needs.
CME is an executive board member of the MIDI Association and operates under the tagline "The MIDI Experts." The company employs a community-driven development model called "Crowd Creation," inviting users to participate directly in the product development process. Leadership includes founder and CEO Zhao Yitian, with team members based across Singapore, mainland China, Taiwan, France, the Netherlands, and the United States.
CME has 34 products cataloged on Equipboard, including MIDI Keyboard Controllers, MIDI Interfaces, and DAW Controllers. Their gear is featured by 44 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Rock, and Pop. Notable users include Tyler Joseph, M O R Δ L E S, and Mac DeMarco.
