Emagic GmbH was a German music software and hardware company founded in 1992 in Rellingen, Germany by Gerhard Lengeling, Chris Adam, and later Sven Junge. The company's name was coined from a combination of 'electronic' and 'magic.' Emagic is best known as the original developer of Logic, the MIDI sequencing and digital audio workstation that began life as Notator Logic on the Atari ST and Apple Macintosh in 1993 before dropping the Notator prefix and being redesigned as Emagic Logic. The software became one of the most influential DAWs of its era, competing directly with Steinberg's Cubase.
Beyond Logic, Emagic developed SoundDiver, a cross-platform editor/librarian application used to manage patches and presets on a wide range of hardware synthesizers over MIDI. The company also produced a respected line of MIDI hardware, including the rackmount Unitor 8 and AMT8 8-in/8-out MIDI interfaces and the smaller MT4, which introduced Emagic's Active MIDI Transmission (AMT) technology — a look-ahead buffering system designed to tighten MIDI timing when used alongside Logic.
Emagic was acquired by Apple in July 2002, after which Logic became the foundation for Apple's Logic Pro and, in stripped-down form, GarageBand. Development of the Windows version of Logic was discontinued shortly after the acquisition, with Logic 5.5.1 being the last Windows release. The Emagic brand was retired in 2006, but its MIDI hardware and original Logic releases remain collectible items among producers and studio engineers.
