"The Elektron Machinedrum, Elektron Octatrack and the [Roland] Jupiter-6 are my favourite hardware machines."

"...right now, also, one of my favorites. Because it's basically any kind of sampler where you put in all your sounds, or you put in loops, or even longer pieces of music. And you can real-time chop them up in here. It's very intuitive. There's a lot of randomness I like about it. This also - similar to the Monomachine - you have 8 tracks where on each track you can program one sequence... it has different FX sections as well, the first which is the most important is the pitching, but also you can choose the start point of the sample. So you can basically choose where the signal should start from the whole audio file. And you can move around, most of the time a lot of cool things happen."

When walking through his track "Missile," Boys Noize talks about how he used Massive: "On this bit it's also Massive I've used. I've kind of rediscovered it. I used it in the beginning when it came out, then I didn't use it for two years, and now I've used it again because I think it still has super strong filters, and the sound is just really, really good."

“I never use this to mix, I just wanted something I could record through. What I sometimes do is make mirror images of the EQ bands on the left and right channel which is a trick I read about, but that’s all I use the EQ for. I have the effects set up on the busses, but again it’s just for recording.”

"I like the Genelec monitors just because I'm used to them. I remember I sat in Switch’s studio in LA and he had the Adams – they sounded good but I thought they were more plastic!"

"A lot of the distortion I do is with guitar pedals. Like on that new synth that comes in at the very end (3:54 of the video), [it's] the Turbo Distortion 2 from Boss. Pretty basic, but gives nice analog feeling."

"This is the Alpha 2 - really nice. For instance, what I really love about it is the possibility of making chord sounds. To get like a 90s kind of flavor you go on like an organ and that makes it even nicer. We actually did the track Avalanche with Erol Alkan and Jarvis Cocker with this one. I bought it in Japan I think after I heard one of those bass sounds that I thought I knew from a Timbaland record. The brass sounds are really nice - super warm. And yeah, the chord function is really nice... You can trigger a chord with a single key, so we did basically the entire track on this. It’s totally different to other Junos.”

"For me, Elektron produces the most futuristic machines. The Machinedrum is my favourite by far! It's so easy and fun to program amazing sounds and patterns that just sound different to all the generic electro house and dubstep beats that I really can’t stand. For example, I love when the kick drum changes within the track, not the sound, more the frequencies or the filter."

Find it on:

"Classic drum machine. It has different tones, different accents. So what I do is I program something before, like two or three sequences, and then just play around with it. What I like a lot is really about those live sessions you can do. Maybe not so many possibilities with this one because it's quite simple."

"When I put it all together I do it in Logic. I think it's a good mixer."

"On the buss in my DAW, I usually use the Duende SSL Buss Compressor. I like to go a bit harder when mixing on the buss to get the mix pumping. The settings I use depend on the track but usually it's a low threshold, a ratio of about four-to-one and I usually set the SSL's release to automatic."

"Sugar Bytes Effectrix… makes it on to most tracks, in one way or another."

Find it on:

"To be honest, I love pretty much all the UAD-2 plug-ins, Native Instruments' Massive and Kontakt and Sugar Bytes Effectrix or Turnado. I think they all make it on to most tracks, in one way or another."

Boys Noize talks about his LinnDrum vintage drum machine:

"When you make a track with a LinnDrum, you can’t really add a big bassline or something. You need to find the right sounds to give the LinnDrum its space in the mix.

Prince had just his voice, a LinnDrum and one keyboard and it was enough. No bassline or anything, just nice programming. That’s what I like about it, it’s got such a strong sound."

Boys Noize speaks about the various chips he has collected for his Linndrum machine: "When I bought the Linndrum from Fabian [Feyerabendt] from Toktok it came with a bunch of EPROMs, so I can just switch out any sound. It’s tricky though, as the pins are really easy to destroy so you have to be really careful when you’re changing them. It’s great because you can put a bell sound on the snare, for example..."

"At the front is the SH-05 it’s got such a powerful sound. I only got it a couple of months ago and I’ve already done two tracks. The filters are so amazing.”

"There's also a Roland SH-101 with inverted key colours. It has extra filters modded on, I used it on my NERD remix. If I ever want a real good saw sound, this is what I use. It’s fun to trigger it with a drum machine too.”

"This is my beloved 707. It’s a custom made one from Diabolical, from the States. What they did is that for every single instrument - bass drum, snare, toms - they put different filters in, bit crush, and pitch as well. This one I sync to the 303. I've used it on a couple of tracks already, like my acid track '1010'. It's called actually '1010' because 707 and 303 added together. It's cool, like especially on snare and toms, it sounds really cool with that effect."

Boys Noize talks about that despite being able to make the "acid" sound with plugins, the original TB-303 has a character that cannot quite be replicated.

"You can make acid with a lot of plugins too. I think the filters of the 303 are what really make it special. I haven't heard any one going as soft. And then what I like to do is put the 303 through a distortion pedal, which in this case is an OTO pedal."
