Fenix is a guitar brand introduced by the Korean instrument manufacturer Young Chang in 1979. The brand was launched into wider international markets at the British Music Fair in July 1989, where it was positioned as an affordable alternative to Fender's Squier line — notably built in the same Young Chang factory that was producing Squier models for Fender at the time. Fenix instruments were largely modeled on Fender designs, and the lineup included Stratocaster-style electrics like the ST-20, Telecaster-style guitars, and Precision and Jazz Bass copies, alongside acoustic and electro-acoustic models such as the SL-92SLA.
Fenix electrics enjoyed roughly a four-year run in the UK, distributed by Barnes & Mullins, and earned a reputation among players for build quality that compared favorably to budget competitors of the era. Licensing pressures around the Fender-derived body and headstock shapes pushed Young Chang to wind down the electric line, after which the company concentrated the Fenix name on acoustic guitars. Barnes & Mullins briefly reintroduced the range in 1996.
Used Fenix instruments — particularly the late-80s Korean-made S-style and bass models — circulate through the vintage market on sites like Reverb and continue to draw interest from players seeking inexpensive Fender-alike guitars from the late Korean export-boom period.
