1989 Young Chang Fenix ST-20 'Strat' | Planet Botch

planetbotch.blogspot.com

The Fenix ST-20 emerges as a fascinating footnote in the history of budget electric guitars, boasting solid construction and arguably better sound than its Squier counterparts. While it offers a compelling alternative in terms of value, especially for those seeking a solid wood body, it’s not without shortcomings. The initial models closely mirrored the Squier Strat but lacked distinct character, and later iterations struggled with identity as they evolved. With mixed reviews on assembly quality and inconsistent market perception, the ST-20 stands as a decent choice for budget-conscious musicians, but it may not fulfill the aspirations of those seeking a truly unique instrument. Overall, it's a modest contender with an intriguing backstory but lacks the robust reputation needed to stand the test of time.

In this photo from 1995, Steven Wilson can be seen playing his black Fenix ST-20 Stratocaster copy. Note the distinctive pole piece-less pickups, which were actually stacked humbuckers on the later Fenix models. Steven can also be seen playing the guitar in this live video from 1994: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnkJKPNlBGk

Later on, Steven replaced the bridge pickup with some type of Strat-sized humbucker, as seen close up in this live TV performance from 1996: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6GTDpeYIdw

This guitar was used from the start of Porcupine Tree until around 1997, when he acquired an HSS Stratocaster copy in red.
