Hairball Audio is a Seattle-based manufacturer of professional audio equipment that specializes in recreations of classic studio compressors and microphone preamplifiers, offered both as complete units and as DIY kits. Founded in 2007 out of a home project studio, the company grew out of the DIY pro-audio community and has become best known for its faithful takes on the Universal Audio 1176 FET compressor, offered in Rev A (Blue Stripe), Rev D, and Rev F variations in both rack and 500-series formats.

Beyond the 1176 line, the company makes the Lola microphone preamp and the Elements series of preamps, and sells an extensive parts catalog including transformers, enclosures, faceplates, and components that hobbyists and small builders use to assemble their own outboard gear. Enclosures and op-amps are produced in Seattle, with custom transformers sourced from U.S. manufacturers.

Hairball occupies a niche at the intersection of boutique studio hardware and the hobbyist electronics scene, with its kits reviewed in publications such as Tape Op and discussed on communities like Gearspace. The company also supplies parts to other small builders who assemble and sell Hairball-based units under their own names.

Hairball Audio has 5 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Effects Processors and Preamps.
