Manley Laboratories is an American manufacturer of professional vacuum tube audio equipment, founded by David Manley and based in Chino, California. David Manley began designing high-fidelity tube amplifiers in South Africa in 1980 before moving production to the UK and then the US. Manley Laboratories was established as an independent company in 1993, separating from the VTL Amplifiers division. EveAnna Manley served as President, CEO, and sole owner for over two decades before the company was acquired by Dirk Ulrich's Rockforce Tech Holding in 2025.
The company is best known for its professional studio gear, particularly the Variable Mu stereo limiter-compressor, the VOXBOX channel strip, and the Massive Passive equalizer — all of which have become staples in recording and mastering studios worldwide. Their product line spans tube microphones (the Reference Cardioid, Reference Gold, and Reference Silver), mic preamps (the FORCE and SLAM!), dynamics processors (the ELOP+ and Nu Mu), and the Backbone mastering console. Both the FORCE and the Backbone have won TEC Awards. Manley also produces a line of audiophile hi-fi amplifiers and preamps, including the Stingray II integrated amplifier and the Steelhead RC phono stage.
All Manley products are hand-built in California. The company has earned a reputation for uncompromising build quality and a distinctly musical tube sound, making their gear a fixture in high-end studios and on touring rigs for major artists.
Manley has 39 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Effects Processors, Preamps, and Condenser Microphones. Their gear is featured by 158 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Pop, and Rock. Notable users include Neeraj Khajanchi, Tommy Lee, and Jerry Finn. Most Manley products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
