Founded by Bill Finnegan in Boston, Massachusetts in 1994, Klon is a boutique pedal maker responsible for one of the most revered and sought-after guitar effects of all time: the Klon Centaur Professional Overdrive. Developed over four and a half years with collaborators including MIT-trained electrical engineer Fred Fenning, the Centaur was designed to emulate the natural distortion of a tube amplifier pushed to high volume while preserving the guitar's underlying tone. Its circuit — which doubles the internal voltage and splits the signal into three paths — helped popularize the concept of "transparent" overdrive, influencing an entire category of pedals that followed.
Finnegan hand-built each Centaur in his home, producing approximately 8,000 units before discontinuing the pedal in 2008. On the secondary market, original Centaurs have become some of the most expensive guitar pedals ever traded, with prices reaching well into five figures. In 2014, Finnegan introduced the Klon KTR, a more compact and affordable version of the Centaur circuit with the addition of a switchable buffered/true bypass designed by fellow pedal maker Paul Cochrane. The KTR's enclosure famously bears the inscription: "Kindly remember: The ridiculous hype that offends so many is not of my making."
The Klon Centaur has been used by guitarists including Jeff Beck, John Mayer, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Nels Cline of Wilco, Matt Schofield, and Ed O'Brien of Radiohead. Despite being a two-product company, Klon's influence on the overdrive pedal landscape is enormous, with dozens of manufacturers producing their own "Klon-style" circuits.
