Ian D'Sa's Gear
At 0:36 in this video, Ian D'Sa says, "My favourite pedal I have here is the pedal called "The Wooly Mammoth", which you might hear in songs..." and plays "Devil In A Midnight Mass" a little bit."
"I play Stratocasters mainly live, it's a Fat Strat Deluxe with the hum bucker pickup," says Ian D'Sa, in this interview.
In this video, Ian D'Sa mentions he modded his American Deluxe strats with the JB humbucker in the bridge.
"And in the studios I play a '52 Telecaster reissue for all the clean stuff," says Ian D'Sa, in this interview.
"...for all the heavier stuff I played a '58 Gibson Junior," says Ian D'Sa, in this interview.
Find it on:
Used on Billy Talent III primarily, as well as the Rusted From The Rain film clip. I don't think he used it before III and I haven't seen it since.
I use my Stephenson as the main sound, and then we have a Diesel H4, with a Diesel cab, and a Komit Concorde as well
In 0:20 he explains he uses this Diezel amp, although he does not say the model name, obviously its a VH4.
At beginning of video Ian shows his main guitar and names it
At 1:10 in the video, Ian is auditioning a Big Muff Pi Ram's Head. The pedal is distinctively a third edition Ram's Head Big Muff because of the red text and black knobs.
"'And before you came to Stevenson's amps, what did you run through?''Before that I was using a (Peavey) 5150 head, I think it was a '91. And I really liked those tones, too, like they were really clean. I'm a big fan of the bright guitar amps. I was using a 5150 through a Vox cabinet at the time and it was super bright but at the same time with the 5150 every time you turned the gain up it would just get a little too saturated for me. I couldn't find that clean and heavy balance whereas with the Stevenson I found that balance pretty easy,'" says Ian D'Sa, in this interview.
Ian says that it is one of the only pedals he uses live
" I use my Stephenson as the main sound, and then we have a Diesel H4, with a Diesel cab, and a Komit Concorde as well'
According to Uberproaudio.com Ian D'sa uses Dean Markley 10-46 gauge strings
In the start of the video appears Ian playing the intro of Pins and Needles with this guitar in the studio.
Ian uses a Gibson ES-335 during some Billy Talent rehersals, and he also used it to record some solos during the tracking of Billy Talent III in 2009.
In this video, Ian D'Sa shows that he dual-mic's his iso cabs with an MD421 and a SM57 mic.
"I've been screwing around with this new pedal that Vincent from VL Effects sent me... Beautiful sounding pedal," Ian D'Sa says, at 0:59 in this video.
In a YouTube video titled "#AskBillyTalent - Ian Answers Question 1/5," Ian D'Sa mentions using the Klon Centaur Overdrive pedal during live performances for his solos.
Ian D'Sa uses Dean Markley NickelSteel Electric Guitar Strings, 10-52. Having worked with the band and knowing the guitar tech, I have a pack of Ian's strings, which are optimal for his Drop D tuning.
"and I use Gibson Les Paul Juniors and Silverbursts for the heavy stuff"
In this interview by "UberProAudio", they interview Ian D'sa over the phone about Billy Talent's new album "Afraid of Heights". Later in the interview Ian was asked about what guitar strings he uses, He explains that on The "Afraid of Heights" album and tour he has been using and really enjoying the D'Addario NYXL Nickel Wound Light Top / Heavy Bottom Electric Guitar Strings (10-52), and that he did use Dean Markley (10-52) guitar strings but he was looking for strings more brighter in tone and guitar strings that last much longer.
At 5:17 he's talking about it.
"this guitar was custom made for me [...] Nik Huber Guitars, very nice guitar. I've been playing it the whole tour."
"Some of the pedals I use are a Klon KTR, for solos and leads..."

At 0:53 in the video, the camera pans up on a TV yellow Gibson Les Paul Special.
The body shape (single-cut with no curve), pickups (two P90's) and controls (two volume and two tone) of the guitar are identical to an LP Special and the headstock is definitely Gibson. However, the bridge is a 'Tune-O-Matic' instead of the usual 'wraparound' bridge, so this guitar could be modified or a special-edition.
"So for this tour i've gotten these two Silent Sisters, which are great cabs. They're iso cabs, and inside, one V30 speaker, and i've got a 421 (Sennheiser MD 421) and a 57 (Shure SM57) on that."
Video: 1:39
"This is my main guitar, its a Fender Stratocaster American Deluxe HSS, which i've outfitted with custom staggered pickups for the neck and middle position."

Two of them can be seen very briefly at 1:28.
