Kush Audio is a Los Angeles-based audio company founded by Gregory Scott, a recording engineer and hardware designer known in the pro audio world by his moniker "UBK" (short for "Useless Bank of Knowledge"). Scott built his reputation as a gear modder — most notably with his modified UBK Fatso — before launching Kush Audio to develop original analog hardware designs. The company's flagship hardware unit, the Clariphonic, is a mastering-grade parallel shelving EQ with a unique filter topology that can simultaneously lift both high and low frequencies. Other notable hardware designs include the Electra EQ and the Tweaker.
Kush Audio also develops a full line of audio plugins, many of which are direct emulations of their analog hardware — including the Clariphonic Mk3 and Electra DSP — while others are original designs with a distinctly analog-influenced character. The plugin lineup spans compressors (Silika, Novatron, AR-1), EQs (Hammer, Blyss), saturation and transformer coloring tools (the Omega series, modeling Altec, Neve, and API-style transformers), a tube DI emulation (REDDI), and a plate reverb (Goldplate). A hallmark of Kush plugin design is the inclusion of "blend" knobs that let users dial in the amount of analog-style saturation and character. The company offers its entire plugin catalog through an annual subscription as well as individual purchases.
Kush Audio operates as a small, independently owned company with a team of roughly six people. Scott also runs a sister brand, Sly-Fi Digital, which focuses on plugin emulations of classic third-party hardware with added refinements and modifications. The combined Kush and Sly-Fi catalogs have earned a devoted following among mixing and mastering engineers who favor colorful, characterful processing over clinical transparency.
Kush Audio has 30 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Effects Processors, EQ Plugins, and Saturation Plugins. Their gear is featured by 33 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Pop, and Rock. Notable users include Acle Kahney, Lenno, and Richard Devine.
