Mäag Audio is a professional audio equipment manufacturer based in the Salt Lake City, Utah area, founded in 2009 by sound engineer Cliff Maag Sr. alongside his sons Ryan and Cliff Jr. and partner Travis Allen. The company is a continuation of Cliff Maag's earlier work at NTI/Nightpro in the 1990s, where he first introduced the AIR BAND® — a high-frequency shelving band designed to add open, transparent top end to recordings without the harshness associated with conventional high-shelf EQs. The original inspiration came from a vocal chain combining a C12 microphone, Boulder preamp, and LA-2A compressor.
The brand is best known for the EQ4, a 6-band equalizer built around the AIR BAND, available in rack, 500-series (EQ4-500, EQ4-500-BK), and dual-channel mastering (EQ4M) formats. Other hardware includes the EQ2-500 and PREQ2/PREQ4-500 microphone preamplifiers, and the MAGNUM-K compressor. Software versions of the EQ2, EQ4, EQ4 MS, and MAGNUM-K are distributed through Plugin Alliance and Brainworx, with Universal Audio offering UAD-platform versions of the EQ4.
Mäag's reputation centers on musical, low-phase-shift equalization rather than surgical correction, with the AIR BAND in particular becoming a widely-used tool for adding presence to vocals, drum overheads, and mix buses in professional studios.
