Pignose is an American manufacturer of portable guitar amplifiers, founded in 1969 by Richard Edlund and Wayne Kimbell. Edlund built the original prototype inside an English Leather cologne box using a small 5-watt circuit, and the distinctive compact design became the brand's hallmark. The company formally launched the Legendary 7-100 at the 1973 Summer NAMM show — a battery-powered, 5-inch speaker amplifier weighing just five pounds that introduced true portability to electric guitar. Backed by an investment from members of the band Chicago, including guitarist Terry Kath, Pignose sold over 50,000 units in its first year.
The 7-100 quickly found its way into professional recording studios. Eric Clapton used a Pignose to record the guitar parts on "Motherless Children" (1974), Joe Walsh employed one on "Rocky Mountain Way," and Frank Zappa relied heavily on the amp for the guitar tones on Apostrophe(') and Over-Nite Sensation. Early prototypes were distributed to members of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Eagles, and The Who, cementing the amp's cult status.
Beyond the flagship 7-100, Pignose produces the Hog series of rechargeable portable amplifiers and a line of travel guitars and basses with built-in amplifiers, including the PGG-200 electric guitar series and the PGB-200 bass. The company also offers a PGU-200 ukulele with onboard amplification. Pignose is owned by Arai & Co., Inc., the Japanese parent company of Aria guitars, and is distributed in the U.S. by LPD Music International.
