Blackstar Amplification was founded in 2004 by four former Marshall employees — Bruce Keir, Ian Robinson, Paul Hayhoe, and Richard Frost — who brought over 50 years of combined amplifier engineering experience to the venture. After roughly two and a half years of research and development conducted out of a garden shed in Northampton, England, the company made its public debut at the Musikmesse Frankfurt trade show in 2007. The Series One amplifiers that launched the brand quickly gained a following among high-gain and metal players for their aggressive tones and broad tonal flexibility.
Several patented technologies define the Blackstar sound. The ISF (Infinite Shape Feature) tone control lets players sweep continuously between American and British voicing characteristics within a single knob. The DPR (Dynamic Power Reduction) circuit enables valve amps to achieve power tube saturation at reduced wattage, while the TVP (True Valve Power) technology in solid-state models emulates the response of six distinct power tube types — including EL84, EL34, 6V6, and KT88. These technologies appear across a wide product range, from the valve-driven HT-1 and HT-5 mini combos and the stage-ready HT Venue and St. James series, to the battery-powered Fly 3 mini amp and the ID:Series digital modeling amps. The company also manufactures effects pedals, cabinets, and audio interfaces.
Blackstar's roster of associated artists includes Phil Collen of Def Leppard, Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes, Neal Schon of Journey, Gus G, and Richie Sambora. Headquartered in Northampton, the brand positions itself as a musician-founded company with an emphasis on engineering valve-quality tone across all price points.
Blackstar has 246 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Combo Guitar Amplifiers, Guitar Amplifier Heads, and Guitar Amplifier Cabinets.
