Kustom Amplification is an American amplifier brand founded in 1964 by Charles A. "Bud" Ross in Chanute, Kansas. Ross built his first amp for his own band in 1958, and the company he launched a few years later became famous for its distinctive tuck-and-roll Naugahyde-covered cabinets — an aesthetic borrowed from hot-rod upholstery that made Kustom rigs instantly recognizable on stages in the late 1960s and 1970s. The original Kansas operation grew quickly into a full-range manufacturer of guitar amps, bass amps, PA systems, organs, guitars, and accessories, including an early talk box known as The Bag.
Artists associated with Kustom gear during the brand's first era span a wide stylistic range, including Creedence Clearwater Revival, Leon Russell, The MC5, Johnny Cash, The Jackson 5, The Carpenters, James Jamerson, and Herbie Hancock. The original company changed hands several times and was discontinued by the mid-1980s before Hanser Holdings (now Hanser Music Group) acquired the brand and reintroduced new models in 1994.
The modern Kustom lineup focuses on practical stage and practice amplification, including the Carbon series of guitar combos, the Madero acoustic amps, and the Cobalt and Camber bass amps, alongside HIPAC and KPX PA systems and KPC/KPX personal monitors and powered cabinets.
Kustom has 117 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Combo Guitar Amplifiers, Guitar Amplifier Heads, and Bass Combo Amplifiers. Their gear is featured by 37 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Funk / Soul, and Blues. Notable users include Paolo Gregoletto, John Moyer, and Thomas O'Malley. Most Kustom products sit on the budget-friendly end of the spectrum.
