Laney Amplification was founded in 1967 by Lyndon Laney in Birmingham, England — born of necessity when Laney, then playing bass in a local band, built his first amplifier in his father's garage rather than buy a commercially made one. Word spread quickly, and sales to local musicians followed. Among his earliest customers was Tony Iommi, who used Laney amplifiers on Black Sabbath's debut album in 1970, helping cement the brand's association with heavy, gain-driven British tone.
Throughout the following decades, Laney expanded their lineup from the early LA100BL and KLIPP series — the latter featuring an onboard treble booster — to the AOR (Advanced Overdrive Response) series, which added an extra gain stage favored by rock and metal players. The VH100R, GH50L, and GH100L heads earned a devoted following among players including Paul Gilbert, Andy Timmons, John 5, and Joe Satriani. Laney's long collaboration with Tony Iommi produced multiple signature models, beginning in 1995 and continuing through the dual-channel TI100 head and a limited-edition Black Country Customs reissue built to exacting specifications.
The Laney catalog spans a broad range of player needs: the retro-styled Lionheart valve range, the compact CUB series for lower-wattage playing, the NEXUS bass amplification line, the high-gain Iron Heart (IRT) series, and the boutique hand-wired offerings from their Black Country Customs sub-brand. Manufactured and headquartered in Halesowen in the West Midlands, Laney remains family-owned and sells through a global network of distributors and retailers.
Laney has 296 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Combo Guitar Amplifiers, Guitar Amplifier Heads, and Guitar Amplifier Cabinets. Their gear is featured by 166 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Metal, and Pop. Notable users include Tony Iommi, Matt Pike, and Tom Quayle. Laney's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
