Supro is an American electric guitar, amplifier, and effects brand with origins in Chicago in 1935. The name began as the budget-oriented line of the National Dobro Corporation, which was later reorganized as Valco. Through the mid-twentieth century, Supro produced electric guitars, lap steels, and tube amplifiers — including what is credited as the first commercially available combo amplifier with built-in reverb. Production continued until 1968, when Valco closed and the Supro name fell dormant for decades.
The amplifiers from Supro's original Chicago run became iconic in rock and roll for their harmonically rich, compressed tube tones. Jimmy Page relied on a vintage Supro Coronado combo to record much of Led Zeppelin's debut album, an association that brought widespread attention to the brand long after the factory had closed. Jimi Hendrix also played through Supro amplifiers early in his career, and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys has been noted as a user of vintage Supro guitars.
Revived in 2013, Supro returned with amplifiers voiced to capture the character of the originals. The Black Magick series draws directly on the circuit topology of the vintage Supro combos associated with Page, while the broader lineup extends to electric guitars, basses, and effects pedals spanning boost, fuzz, overdrive, delay, tremolo, and vibrato — all built around the aesthetic of mid-century American tone.
