Founded in 1981 in Mukilteo, Washington, Rane is an American pro audio company that became one of the most influential names in DJ technology. The company was started by former employees of Phase Linear Corporation, including co-founders Linda Arink and Dennis Bohn, who pooled decades of combined audio experience. Rane's initial products targeted small live bands — most notably the MM 12 matrix mixer — but the company soon pivoted toward the DJ market after legendary sound designer Richard Long approached them to redesign his X3000 crossover. The resulting MP24 became Rane's first DJ mixer and quickly established the brand's reputation in the club and turntablist world.
Rane's contributions to DJ technology are substantial. The TTM 52 and TTM 54 were the first DJ mixers to feature VCA faders and continuous crossfader contour controls, and in 2001 Rane developed the world's first magnetic fader — a contactless design that eliminated wear and latency. The company's partnership with New Zealand-based Serato Audio Research, which began in 2004 with Scratch Live, helped define modern digital DJing. The TTM57SL, released in 2006, was the first DJ mixer with a built-in USB sound card and integrated Serato controls. The lineup has expanded to include the SEVENTY-TWO premium battle mixer with its built-in touchscreen, the TWELVE motorized control turntable, the ONE and PERFORMER controllers, and the FOUR channel mixer — all tightly integrated with Serato DJ Pro.
Acquired by InMusic Brands in 2016, Rane maintains a strong following among turntablists and battle DJs. The brand is known for building rugged, performance-focused hardware with professional-grade build quality, and its products have long been a fixture in scratch DJ competitions and club installations worldwide.
