You know... It took us this long to realize that this thread is only good for a day...
HAHAH. Well it is worth it.

To all my fellow guitarists, happy National Guitar Day! It should be a holiday where no one has to go into work and we all get a free guitar. I actually got lucky, I was taking a half day this morning to take my car into the shop, but I ended up getting home with a bunch of extra time. Instead of going right to work, I decided to play guitar with all my spare time. That was a fun way to avoid work.
I can't buy another guitar right now, but my local shop www.impulsemusicco.com is having a 15% off sale on all things guitar if you're interested with a code. I don't work for them, but they are great people, and they have a lot of cool stuff. I want to buy so many things from them, so I need them to stay in business forever haha.

HEY KIDS! Let Uncle Jim mix your band's next recording.
This is really cool of you. I've always been impressed with your knowledge on everything. I'm sure that your studio would be great. My friend I used to have a band back in high school a million years ago, and we've been talking about getting back together once COVID stuff starts to get better. If we start an old man band, I may have to reach out to you for help.

Thank you for the suggestions. I had never heard of the Snarling Dogs, but I've looked them up now, and they look really good. I might have to check those out.

Hello, help me find an inexpensive analog of this guitar
Yeah, mods would definitely have to happen. I wasn't saying that he should put it on himself. But hopefully he would be able to find someone local who can do it at a reasonable price. I've never taken on that kind of project though so don't know how much it cost. Was just throwing that out as an option if it would cost less than getting the expensive guitar.

Hello, help me find an inexpensive analog of this guitar

The version they have is pretty close, but it's missing the Vibrola. Cheapest version of the instrument i've seen so far, though.
I think that would work. With the money you would save from ordering a real one, you can order this guitar and then have a vibrola installed. You can do chrome to match the pickups in the guitar as is:
Or you can get the gold one if you'd like to get new pickups or pickup covers.

Oh I see. I'm not a fan of 5-string basses either, but looking into things that are odd or unique is always cool. I don't own any basses myself, but I have been thinking about it, especially after seeing the Music Man Stingray Special. https://impulsemusicco.com/products/music-man-stingray-special-4-h-electric-bass-aqua-sparkle
My local shop got that in, and it is tempting me every day haha.

Yeah, that sounds good. I was actually just looking at Stringjoy's Jumbo Jazz picks yesterday. I think those would be very similar to the flows. I like the idea of having a bit more grip than the typical jazz picks. https://www.stringjoy.com/categories/strings/picks/jumbo-jazz/
At the same time, I was also looking at getting the sampler pack from Bog Street just to try something very different. This pack gives you one of every type of pick they have. Could be interesting. It would give me an opportunity to play some of those bigger gauges that you like. https://bogstreet.com/collections/most-popular/products/new-bog-street-sampler
Also, for some of those bigger styles there are these https://www.etsy.com/shop/HoneyPicksStore?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=852772859. You may be interested in trying something from them.
Going to spend so much money on picks haha.

Is it worth buying an expensive guitar?
I completely agree with everything being said in this thread. If you have the money and love the guitar, then by all means, go for it. Everything is worth it if it works for you and inspires you. If possible, get your hands on the guitars and try them to make sure you can get the sounds and enjoy the feel of them. I have a Gibson Les Paul Standard, and I do love it to death, but I also have my Reverend Warhawk that cost probably 2.5x less, and I love it just as much. Like the Gibson is a better guitar overall, but I don't think my playing is 2.5x better when I play the LP. Also, definitely check out amps. I need to get a real tube amp now that I have all the guitars I need (for now haha). The amps can make a huge difference.
Another point I'd like to make is I haven't been in a band in years, but when I used to play, I would only bring my Fender Strat. I've put chips and dents in that guitar practicing and what not. So if it got banged up a bit more, no big deal. The Gibson was actually my dad's and he gave it to me because he wasn't playing anymore. Because it was so nice, beautiful and expensive, I barely took the guitar out of the case. It has been in my possession now for probably over a decade. I only really started playing it last year when the quarantine started. I regret not having played the guitar a lot more over the years, but at the same time, when things open back up and if I were to join a band again, I would probably still leave the Gibson at home. I don't want to worry about damaging it or having it stolen. I could only imagine if I bought something more expensive than the standard, I'd be so paranoid about taking care of it.
We're all different people though, so make the decision that you are comfortable with and will make you happy.

Anyone have experience with Harley Benton 212 cabs?
I hope the cabinet works out great. Let us know how you like it. I may look into getting one as well since it is a good deal.

Good point. The sampler pack has a Jazz III so it has that sharp edge. I gave it a quick test run, but I need to give that one more of a try. I do also have some triangle style from Clayton and Fender. The Clayton is rounded, so it is similar to the others, but the Fender one is definitely sharp. The Fender triangle is a bit too large, but I do like the pointy edge, so I think maybe I'll get a pack of sharp Tortex and see about any other shapes I haven't tried yet. I thought about getting some of those fancy thick Honey picks. Heard a lot about them from the Tone Mob Podcast. I wonder if anyone else has actually tried them and how they like them. The honey jar design in particular looks really interesting to me.
As an update to my story in my quest so far, I have decided that I don't need to buy celluloid anymore, and I can't get into the nylons. I messed around with some thins I had lying around on electric and acoustic, and still can't get into them at all. Anything under .70 feels like I'm playing with a piece of paper hah. The Claytons are great and so are the Dunlop Tortex and Gators. I'm still willing to test more of course. You'll never know until you've tried the gamut.

I found a few options that aren't the same, but could be cool if you're looking for a five-string bass. I was wondering if what made you like this was that it is 5 in-line versus the other Fender basses that have 4 in-line and then the fifth on the other side. One of them is the latter, but it is a good red. Maybe it's the painted headstock that you like. I didn't find that, but it was fun looking at bass guitars. I'm thinking about getting my first one. I used to play a little bit on my brother's, but we don't live in the same state anymore.

I also live on a ranch out in the middle of nowhere, my dad's a big rock fan, I can crank the amp up as loud as I want.
I'm jealous. I wish I could crank my amp up. I live in a townhouse, so I have to be mindful of my neighbors. I want to set my amp free!

Yeah I understand the fear. But sometimes it is worth the risk. I bought my amp and one of my guitars without having a chance to try them, and I don’t regret it.

That is unfortunate that you can't try them. I haven't had any experience with them, but I have heard good things. Here is a video from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bEH4gKbT6E&feature=youtu.be from Know Your Gear. Most people seem to like it in the comments. Good luck to you. I hope that it works out for you.

Thanks for the reminder. I changed the image and it looked like it worked this time.

Maybe I should try some of those really thick picks. The thickest I’ve gone is 1.25 and that felt a bit too thick, but maybe going the extreme to a 3 or bigger might do something really different. Thanks for the tip.
5yover 5 years ago
Thanks. The ultex feels nice. I only have 2 of those so not much experience. I like the sound of getting a hole punched in it for more grip. That’s a cool trick.

I originally used heavy celluloids from Fender and Ernie Ball. Then one day, I couldn't find my bulk bag of picks (pretty sure my brother took them and didn't want to admit to it) and only had a few left, and my dad had bought one of those guitar pick punches and made me a ton from old credit cards, driver's licenses, etc. He made me so many that I stopped using real picks for years because I didn't care if they broke, got frayed or I lost them quickly. He still gives them to me every time I see him. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, I'm in the guitar store and they give me a real pick while I'm testing out my new guitar. I forgot how good real picks are. I'm never going back to the credit card picks again. So anyway, I now have gotten:
- Dunlop Med/Heavy Sample Pack (sizes .88 to 1.14)
- Clayton Acetal sizes .80mm and 1.00mm
Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to test them out because I ordered them online (should've bought while I was at the store, but didn't think about it at the time), and they got delivered 2 days after I dislocated my shoulder. I'll heal soon and then really be able to test all these picks and see what I like best. I can already tell I will like the Claytons, and I really like the feel of the Dunlop Tortex and Gator Grips. I don't think I'll like the Nylon picks in the pack, but you never know.
Anyway, I have now become kind of obsessed since I can't practice. I have been looking to see what other picks people are using, and from this website, I see a bunch of artists I like use the Dunlop picks, but in sizes smaller than I ever really used. I did technically have some celluloid medium and lights, but I never really got into them. What do you guys think about the Dunlop .73 and .60 size? Should I also order some of those while I'm on the shelf? What other picks do you recommend/use? Does anyone else spend this much time thinking about their picks haha?

What Kind Of Strings Does Everybody Use?
I'm an Ernie Ball guy. I usually go between the regular and super slinky sets. I've been contemplating ordering from Stringjoy. I hear many people saying great things about them. They take very good care of their strings and apparently have really high standards and recycle strings that most companies would send out to people. If I get them, I'll let you know what I think.

Says I was able to replace it. I don’t see a new image yet, but I think it might have gone.
