Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Sunhouse Sensory Percussion Sensor.

Features and functionality

  • The sensors can distinguish up to 10 zones per drum, allowing for nuanced performance dynamics that typical dual triggers can't match.

    Source
  • Sensory Percussion 2 is more oriented towards electronic/hybrid experimentation and software sequencing than traditional drum triggering setups.

    Source
  • The sensors use machine learning algorithms to identify and process sounds, acting more like microphones than traditional drum triggers.

    Source
  • Contact mics with a 1/4 inch connection can be used on hi-hats to achieve pitch variation, though they're not officially supported by Sunhouse.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Sensory Percussion requires specific sensors and is not compatible with traditional triggers or existing gear, necessitating purchase of the full package.

    Source
  • The system is software-only; no microphones are involved in capturing the drum sounds.

    Source

User experience

  • Using Roland piezo triggers with Sensory Percussion is possible but limits functionality to a single zone, impacting the expressive potential of the setup.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Switching from Roland piezo triggers to Evans sensors enhances freedom and dynamic control, leveraging the full multi-zone capability of Sensory Percussion.

    Source
  • Attaching a contact mic to hi-hats allows for dynamic pitch changes, but users may encounter "cannot detect sensor" messages in the velocity i/o window.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Users can program low-velocity head touches to mute sounds, showcasing the system's customization potential.

    Source
  • Users have experimented with low volume hats for quieter practice, using alternative methods like contact mics for integration with Sensory Percussion.

    Source

Comparisons

  • For accurate MIDI velocity data, dedicated triggers like Roland's are preferred over Sensory Percussion's sensors, which aren't primarily designed for MIDI.

Gear Review: Is Sensory Percussion the Future of Drum Triggering? - DRUM! Magazine

drummagazine.com

Sunhouse's Sensory Percussion Sensors redefine drum triggering with their innovative software and hypersensitive sensors, allowing drummers to explore a vast array of sounds and effects. The real-time manipulation of effects based on playing dynamics adds a thrilling layer to performance. However, the setup can be tedious, requiring patience and meticulous training to achieve optimal accuracy. While it's tailored for creative experimentation, those seeking a straightforward trigger solution might find it overwhelming. Ultimately, this system is a game changer for adventurous drummers but may not suit everyone’s needs.

The future of triggers

This product made me create a custom kit just for a set of these. Combined with the Roland KD-7 and a Scarlett interface, I'm able to program and create/trigger anything in my arsenal in a way that is both natural and experimental for a drummer. This and iOS are the future and cutting edge of new ways to intuitively make music.
