DW (Drum Workshop) was founded in 1972 by Don Lombardi, who opened a drum teaching studio in Santa Monica, California. John Good, who began as a student under Lombardi, became a pivotal creative partner and the company's self-described "woodologist," driving DW's approach to shell construction and tonal innovation. What started as a lessons-and-equipment operation grew into one of the most recognized drum manufacturers in the world. DW's first commercial product was a height-adjustable trap-case seat, followed by the DW 5000 bass drum pedal in 1979, which became a widely adopted industry standard.
The company builds its instruments at its Oxnard, California facility and is known for handcrafted, U.S.-manufactured drums. DW pioneered technologies including Timbre Matched shells and Specialized Shell Configuration (SSC), which allow precise control over the tonal properties of individual drum shells. Their product lineup spans from the fully custom Collector's Series to the Performance Series and Design Series, as well as the DWe — a convertible system that allows acoustic drums to function as electronic triggers. DW's hardware, particularly its pedals, is widely regarded as a benchmark in the industry.
DW's artist roster has historically included Neil Peart (Rush), Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe), Sheila E., Terry Bozzio, and Marco Minnemann, among many others across rock, jazz, pop, and metal. The brand also owns Pacific Drums and Percussion (PDP), which produces more accessible entry-level kits under a separate name.
DW has 471 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Snare Drums, Drum Sets, and Bass Drum Pedals. Their gear is featured by 301 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Metal. Notable users include Dave Grohl, Nathan Followill, and Christoph Schneider. Most DW products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
