Could anyone please add the Marshall Astoria Classic 30- Watt head https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AstoriaCLASH--marshall-astoria-classic-30-watt-handwired-tube-head I could get hang of the add link thing, it wouldnt let me.

I think it's kicking back the request because this amp head is discontinued. Your link formatting looks correct. Anyway, here you go:

Well one entry by type (electric/acoustic/bass) is a good idea. There always space to explain which gauge is used en the description. I'll use this entries to some artist and mine too. Thanks for your work :)

Deal! I like the way you think :)

Any recommendations on what image to use for each of these entries?

Do they make a "standard" size in each that doesn't specify exact #s right on the package? If so, I think that would be our best bet. Or maybe I'll photoshop-out the sizes, lol.

Hello!

Thank you!

Hey David, gorgeous guitar!

What's the deal with the Red Flake finish? Was that a color that has been discontinued, or was it just never available on Sweetwater? The Black Sparkle is already in the database, because it's current on Sweetwater, so I'm curious. Educate me so we can figure out how to handle this one.

Vintage Gear or AU / VST ?

That seems like the rule but i suspect its actually the exception. It happens multiple times a day but compared to the sheer amount of music content uploaded to YouTube or Tiktok those successes are a drop in the bucket. I wouldn't think the odds of your well produced track cutting through the noise of spotify are any worse than getting a million youtube views with your live groovebox exploration. I think YouTube really lends itself to low production values. The poor sound quality is a real leveler.

Good points, Jim. I appreciate your more optimistic take.

Spotify makes decent metrics available, but I haven't taken the time to dive into what, if anything, is available re: comparable Youtube data... so my arguments lack the rigor of empirical evidence.

Also, I'm happy to live in a time when every piece of music gear or music software released finally has a healthy library of user-created demo content to support it. I have nothing but appreciation for people that take the time to make that kind of content... so I'm not trying to throw shade on anyone engaging in that activity.

Vintage Gear or AU / VST ?

Its rough. Computers have raised the bar for production values. Gone are the days when an indie dance track could be cut with a drum machine and a couple of synths live through a mackie to a dat tape or cassette.

Excellent point.

That said, we're now in a strange era in which a wonderful track that has been produced to the highest standards is still very likely to be entirely ignored, while a video of a mediocre track playing back through a drum machine and a couple of synths, all fed to a Mackie, is way more likely to crack 1M view on Youtube than a music video for that aforementioned wonderful, fully mixed & mastered track.

Happy New Year!

Since strings are critical to tone and playability, and I think it's important to have all current string manufacturers represented in the database, but the formatting on the 6(?) sets you requested would take me close to an (unpaid) hour to sift through and add to the database. We could simplify it down to one entry for guitar, one for bass, and one for acoustic, but that's probably not what you want.

Are you planning to use these entries to add Artist Gear submissions to the database, or do you only need them for your own Equipboard page?

Vintage Gear or AU / VST ?

that being said, I don’t think there’s much maintenance involved with hardware...

Sounds like you're good at selling your gear before it turns 30 years old. One of my primary uses of this site is keeping track of which items in my studio still need repairs, lol.

Computers are really a double edge sword, because while they enable so much in terms of music production, they are also probably the biggest reason why we are not putting out as much as we should be.

Back in the '00s, I would have agreed with this 100%. I remember reading an interview with Mike Paradinas (who now runs the Planet Mu label) and he was lamenting that back when he just made music on an Atari ST running Cubase, a sampler, and a couple of keyboards and rack fx, he could crank out a full song in one day -- but switching over to modern PC and VSTs, his output slowed considerably, as there were so many more things to tweak, consider, and second-guess.

That said, now that we're in a world of producers who have never known life without Live or FL Studio, I think we're at a point now where there are plenty of real-world examples of ppl who crank out music all day long by using a mostly-software/ITB workflow... those folks are typically good at self-limiting what plugins they entertain, and what aspects of production they invest a ton of tweak-time to... they don't need the inherent limitations of hardware to help force them down a path towards completion.

@jimmarchi1 I agree, it's definitely not a DAW, but there's a lot of stuff cluttering up the DAW category that isn't a DAW. We really need a category for sequencer plugins. For now, Strokes is in with the "Groovebox" software, as the maker lists that as one of the things Strokes can be.

Also, Sound On Sound categorized it as such.

Its probably not all that rare in eastern europe. Commies cranked out just as many microphones as their capitalist neighbors, they had a lot if propaganda to record. I'll bet every radio station in a former eastern block country has a couple TAB Funkenwork condensers buried in a closet... you probably can't trade them for Levi's these days though!

Ha, good points! I was just making a generalization about what kind of things can't be added by anyone through Sweetwater links or Reverb.com landing pages. I wasn't trying to imply that the mic in question was exceedingly rare. I have a feeling @julian_meza intends to add it to Daman Albarn... so brace yourself for a 2% spike in used prices.

I had to look the schematic up. Both 18" models look 90% the same, but I was incorrect about them being a b15 head. They're almost twice as powerful, using 7027a tubes which were an ultra robust 6L6 ampeg used in the V/VT series amps, ab18x is the same amp design as the b25 and b25b heads that I used to like for bass.... which is a V3 with larger coupling caps and different bright and deep switch values. The b18n is solid state rectified, so will be less compressed than a b18x or b25. Different power supply. It makes a difference. The B18Ns ive recorded were punchy as heck versus a b25 and the silicon diode bridge rectifier is probably the reason. I think they're going to sound and feel more different than is indicated by the schematic. A fast, stiff power supply changes amps a lot, especially bass amps.

Wicked.

Separate B18N & B18X profiles then, or one "Ampeg B18(n/x)" profile?

Every new item page that gets added here that only links back to one or two artist or one or two users drags down the site's overall search ranking with Google and similar by a tiny amount. After thousands of such entries, it ended up becoming a pretty big issue. This is why there are restrictions on what can be added.

In the case of this cable, this seems like an item so specific that it's unlikely to have more than a few user accounts linked to it, and likely never have any artists linked to it. So with that in mind, would you be OK with leaving this cable out of the database?

Equipboard Improvement Ideas

No offense intended to anyone, but it's odd to see the same 6 or 7 EDM heroes from the 2010s as the top "Artists Who Use This" for any synth-adjacent product that was first released in the 2010s or earlier (Ableton Live, Serum, FabFilter plugins, etc).

It seems Martin Garrix, Deadmau5, Skrillex and their contemporaries garnered so many followers 10 years ago, that none of the trending/popular artists of the moment seem to have a chance to touch those numbers. The incentives for users to Follow an Artist here may have been different 10 years ago, IDK.

Would it be possible to sort each "Artists Who Use This" section by the "Popular" ranking option used to determine trending Producers, Guitarists, etc?

Personally, it's more interesting to see who is getting the most page views and action at the moment, rather than who was hot during a certain high water mark for the Follow feature.

Ampeg bass combos are legendary, of course, but the B18n & B18x are exceedingly rare, AFAIK.

I know 2 guys who own B18Ns. Anthony and Brian.... different years, same amp, a b15 head on a jumbo cab with a cleveland 18 inch. Maybe it's because the ampeg plant wasn't far from philly but I encounter weird ampeg variants regularly. Trash godz party headquarters is home to a several cool 60s ampegs including Cam's gemini2.

You thinking we add separate entries for B18N & X or just one entry for both?

Hi pkennethk, thanks! I came up with the name "Baterinho" to set it apart from a cajon and to describe what it is: a small drumkit. We later registered it as a trademark and also added "the original drumbox" to emphasize Baterinho is the first of its kind. So Baterinho is both the brand name and product name. Could it be listed that way? Grtz, Jeroen Dekker.

Done!

Hey, I added this as a "Jackson Custom Shop Baritone" so I could add and detail out Mike Stringer's of Spiritbox as well. I think as we see more of these pop up having that option for Jackson will be helpful. The body shapes and specs are different for both, but the descriptions for all of the specs are fully complete so hopefully people can find what they're looking for!

Excellent work, vessel5. :)

... and all this just as Sleep Token hit the Musicradar front page this AM. Your timing is spot-on.

2yover 2 years ago

Post your item add requests here

Hey, the system kicked it back. I do have a feeling we'll begin to see more more baritones pop up as they rise with bands like Sleep Token and Loathe, but it still may be a couple years before we see them fully kick in. I'll get my IQ score up and then make the call. Appreciate the help!

No sweat. Thanks for the really thorough/thoughtful submissions you've made thus far.

New/uncommon scale lengths are a good way to help a customer justify buying yet another guitar ;). So I suspect your forecast is a good one. "Why do I have 8 guitars? Well I only had 5, but then I realized I didn't have an 8 string, or anything with a 26.5" scale, and of course I also needed a true baritone...".

Re: the Jackson Custom Shop Monarkh Baritone entry (or however you decide to work it), just do what your gut tells you as far as making IV's gear profile clear and consistent. As Sleep Token get more and more popular, more people are going to search for what gear they use, and your hard work is what everyone is gonna find as the first Google result... which is why I love this site.

You're sort of the gardener/caretaker of all the Sleep Token profiles at the moment, so you're in the best position to decide how to handle the edge cases.

2yover 2 years ago

Post your item add requests here

I did a bit of searching and I cannot find a Monarkh baritone besides this as well. Maybe I can add a duplicate and put the specs for the Jackson Custom Shop Monarkh under IV. Not sure how to handle getting both added.

Thanks for taking a look. I believe the system would let you add the monarkh custom shop twice, and just clarify in the notes, but I'm not 100% sure. Given that we're trying to not add entries that will only ever be associated with one artist, it's a tough call.

You're two options:

  1. Try adding it now as a second "Jackson Custom Shop Monarkh" and see the system kicks it back.

  2. Continue filling out your profile and adding gear to artists to get your Gear IQ score up high enough to be allowed to add gear that isn't listed on Reverb, Sweetwater, etc. I believe the threshold is a score of 500. Once you get your score high enough, you can make the call yourself and do what you think serve's IV's profile and the overall community the best.
