This is a vintage yamaha acoustic guitar.

Are you ok with this image?

I hate adding things that don't have a clean background, if it can be avoided. Just need you to confirm this is actually an FG400D in the photo.

Please add https://www.schmidt-synthesizer.com/ as the Schmidt 8-voice is not available through outlets such as Sweetwater, Guitar Center, etc

I saw your photo. What an impressive beast!

The database here wants a brand/manufacturer name and a product name.

Is it "The Schmidt Synthesizer by Schmidt"?

"The Eight Voice by Schmidt"?

"Schmidt Synthesizer by E:M:C"?

At the low volume they made these things at, such industry conventions were not a concern... but I'd rather do this just once.

I went through Yamaha's whole grand piano catalogue, comparing this piano (as seen in this article as well as other photos and videos from the apartment) with each model and their structures and colour choices. GC1 was the only match as far as I can tell. Colourwise, I believe he had polished mahogany.

But did you confirm that exact model was for sale in 2001 or earlier? The research you've done is impressive, but you'd need to go through a catalog from 2001 or earlier to see what models were for sale in that timeframe. you're asking for a very specific version of the GC1, we need prove that that exact model of GC1 was available prior to 2002 when David Bowie sold the apartment.

OR, you could play it safe and just log it as a "Yamaha Grand Piano" without trying to pin down the exact model just from photographic evidence.

https://equipboard.com/items/yamaha-grand-piano

I would strongly recommend taking this route. You can put in the notes of your submission that the details point to it being a specific model of GC1.

EDIT:

OR I could create a new generalized entry for Yamaha Baby Grands if you are confident this piano is in that size range. We could even do a generalized entry for the GC1 if you've can verify that this model was on the market at the time and that this piano absolutely is not the slightly larger GC2, for example... the point of having restrictions on users under 500 points is to help train users to create more generalized gear entries that can be re-used for other submissions at a later time. Having an entry for an exact sub-model of Yamaha GC1 is what we are trying to avoid, as this entry, in all likelihood, would only ever be associated with one artist, ever.

It's the grand piano that David Bowie had in his NY apartment: https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/nyc-apartment-featuring-david-bowies-piano-market-65/story?id=46418785

I don't see anything in this article that would identify this piano as the "GC 1 M PE" specifically. Do you have other information that confirms it is this exact model? And this exact model was for sure on the market when David Bowie sold the apartment in 2002? Because the timeline dictates that he would have purchased this piano no later than 2002.

Good vid. I like that he gets impressively aggressive with the whammy at the end ("like a Floyd Rose" he says) , and then shows that he's still more or less in tune.

Stratocaster Whammy Bar Detuning

I'm a big fan of them, so it would definitely help if I could mimic their style. I'm still learning, but I want to be as good as them one day.

Excellent... and brave.

I'm sure you already know this, but if you gave Herman Li a few hours to setup your Squier himself, he could shred on it all day and sound just like Herman Li. This is something that is just generally true of most any decent musician -- they can sound amazing and sound like themselves with any PoS instrument. I didn't need the following video to understand this fact (I learned the hard way), but the fact that he's shredding on a $150 Squier helps drive the point home:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwztSlWXcfM

What is also true, is that there are guitars on the market that are better suited to shredding than a standard-spec Stratocaster. I didn't see Herman do too much with the whammy bar in that vid, and I'm sure that's a deliberate choice based on the limitations of the instrument AND what he feels is important for earlier-stage players to focus on. I love that he makes it clear: "you're not going to be playing Dragon Force songs if you're just staring out".

As to when is the right time to move on from your Squier and get a guitar with more shred-friendly specs, that's a personal decision -- don't let strangers on a forum steer you.

That said, my 2 cents is that you take the time to understand your current instrument as best you can before you go shopping for your next guitar. You'll need this understanding in order to make a good purchase decision. The fact that Herman goes right to his workbench and shows you how to do a full setup on the guitar, in a video aimed at beginners, is 100% on-the-money. Please don't skip over this stuff, it's essential to learning the instrument. Herman is a Gen-Xer like me, and had to learn the hard way: reading Guitar Player Magazine, watching tedious instructional VHS tapes, and playing along to Dave Mustaine on cassettes and CDs. Rather than telling new players to suffer like he probably did, he's trying to make things faster and easier, which tells me he's probably a pretty decent dude.

The fact that you're asking about your Strat going out of tune leads me to believe that you're still learning the differences between a standard-Strat floating-bridge tremolo and a Floyd Rose locking tremolo system like Herman has on most of his guitars. Herman has teachings on this topic too, of course:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyzTJ-R89KI

A more shred-focused guitar isn't going to make you a better player in any way, of course, but if the instrument makes practicing the kind of music you want to play easier and more enjoyable, it might be worth it. Most of your tone is going to come from your amp & FX in these styles, your instrument's job is to fit your hands and playing style like a great pair of shoes.

So, at the risk of being wayyy too presumptuous, and a huge windbag, I'm going throw this out there:

When you can walk into a guitar shop, and tell the person working there the following, and you're comfortable with what each of these things means, I think most would agree that spending $$$ to upgrade is warranted. You may already be at this point now, but here it goes:

"Hi there, I'm looking for my next electric 6-string. Among other styles, I play a lot of Power Metal, and I want something that's more shred-focused than my current standard-spec Strat. I'm looking for something with:

  • A Floyd Rose-style locking trem system, or similar, as I intend to use the whammy bar A LOT, and my Strat's standard trem goes out of tune too fast
  • 24 frets with good upper-fret access
  • A flatter fretboard radius and jumbo frets to make it easier to play high up on the neck
  • At least one humbucker, for a chunkier tone
  • Most importantly, I want a well-made guitar that can give me lower string action with a minimum of fret buzz, so I can move around the neck faster

I'm pretty set on Ibanez, because Herman Li is an influence of mine, and he's been happy with a whole range of different Ibanez guitars throughout his career, but I'm open to anything that is geared towards this kind of playing.

I realize the player's hands, talents, playing style and amp/FX choices dictate tone way more than the guitar itself, but I practice every day and I want my practice time to be more comfortable and enjoyable for the kind of music I'm into.

Also, as this will be my first guitar with a locking tremolo system, I hope your in-house tech can show me how to re-string and tune the guitar. I've watched videos and know what's involved, but I'd appreciate a hands-on demonstration too, if possible."

If you're all set one what each item above means, and you're confident a better guitar would enable you to practice more comfortably, you're ready for that next step, IMHO.

... but, again, I'm just some forum stranger who types too much. I haven't even owned a 6-string in this century. Take my words with a grain of salt.

Whats the best but cheapest hardware for colouring/saturation in 2023?

I like where you're going with this, and I remember the Electrix stuff fondly, but what if I could get my hands on a Mutronics Mutator?

Wow. The gold standard.

That's always been my feeling too, though I've never actually gotten my hands on one. That said, it never sounds anything less than wonderful in demos.

Completely opposite aims from the mangling-chaos of the Sherman Filterbank; one shouldn't even mention them in the same thread... but this is a saturation thread, and I'm feeling gauche.

Stratocaster Whammy Bar Detuning

I'm probably just gonna save for an Ibanez. Herman Li uses the whammy bar on those things a lot without them getting detuned

Is DragonForce a good benchmark for the kind of stuff you're learning to play?

Whats the best but cheapest hardware for colouring/saturation in 2023?

THE SFB is ... yeah ... but

  • trim the input level (ideally e. g. with a Reamp Box)
  • use the MIDI trigger
  • use the BYP/EFF (Mix) knob (!!!)

One approch: Just sending the signal through it in 100% bypass colorizes the signal already and you can trim the color to taste with combinations of mix, input level and filter settings.

I will give this a try the next time I take it out of the box. Cheers.

The SFB must be tamed and you have to learn to use it in a (more or less...) "subtle" way.

Herman's logo of the screaming monk covering his ears is... very appropriate :)

Here's mine; sell it and seek out an electrix filter factory... and if you have a filter factory already I don't know because you already have a softer standalone vcf.

Vox V270 Starstream XII, 12-string, teardrop, semi-hollowbody, sunburst. Made in Italy. 1967/68 first issue. Limited production time. What's the easiest to use hardware synth (that sounds awesome)?

Juno 6. No MIDI errors or patch memory chaos, just sweetspots.

Exactly: that's the magic of those first 3 Junos: they're one big sweet spot.

The patch memory on the 60, 106, Alpha Junos and the rack equivalents is simple as can be... it's hilarious to hear that described as "chaos", lol... but I know @jimmarchi1 agrees with you, on the grounds that patch memory added a lot of complication to synth, and therefore makes the Juno 60 more of repairs liability than the 6.

Case-in-point: my 60 has had some dead memory locations since I got it back in the '00s. I've had the parts to fix that standing by for nearly as long, but I just never seem to get to it.

All that said, I think the OP decided on an Elektron Digitone after all was said and done. One person's weekend of manual-diving and YT tutorials is another person's "easiest". :)

Stratocaster Whammy Bar Detuning

I have a Squier Stratocaster, and I started using the whammy bar for some parts. But sometimes, when I use the whammy bar, it detunes the guitar. Has this happened to anyone else?

If you told me you were able to use the vibrato on your Squier Strat WITHOUT taking the guitar out of tune, I'd be shocked.

There's a reason Jimi Hendrix had to tune his Strat after pretty much every song, and sometimes even during the song.

I haven't owned a guitar with a floating bridge in decades, but I remember the nut being one of the contributing factors... if your strings can't slide smoothly through the nut, they can get "caught" during such a maneuver and you will definitely be at least a little out of tune after it happens.

Nuts are easy to ruin and expensive (in Squier Strat dollars, at least) to replace, so I wouldn't recommend doing any filing or re-shaping of the nut yourself, but Googling how to check your nut action/setup and apply more graphite as a lubricant (if needed) would be a good first step if you're not already an expert on that front. Improving string-slide through the nut won't be a magic bullet to never going out of tune, but it will make a difference and is a good thing to learn about regardless of guitar type or playing style.

How long do artist submissions take?

That's a great question.

Despite what the website might say, moderators only have the ability to see artists that have been requested, not approve them... at least the Approve button has never worked for me. Approvals are something the admins/owners review in their very limited free time.

Just to set expectations, I think only one or two of the Add Artists requests I've made here have ever been approved.

Equipboard Browser Extension

Cool, here's how it is progressing. Which version do you like more?

https://imgur.com/a/a0ED6jY

In my experience, when a designer presents you with 2 concepts that are this similar to each other, it's best to say "thanks for including me, but you clearly know what you want, so go make it happen".

I bet I'd like the shorter one when I'm on my laptop screen, and the longer one when I'm on my desktop screen, but they seem to have identical visual priorities, readability and functionality... so whatever the EB style guide (or full-fledged design system) dictates is AOK with me.

For V1, it will pop up or alert you by extension icon when you are on a URL associated with a product where we have an Equipboard association.

What constitutes an association in this case? Is it as simple as having the product name mentioned anywhere on the page, or does it have to be a url hosted by someone you're in an affiliate agreement with?

Favorite Music Related YouTube Channels

On further consideration, I think I can whittle down my "hidden gems" recommendations to 2 channels:

Dance/Electronic composition, arrangement, and production

Music Theory Essentials

Bethelick

If you are trying to make dance music of any kind (especially any flavor of house), Bethelick is gold. They use Ableton Live for all videos, but what they are teaching is equally relevant to every DAW or hardware sequencer.

There is zero fluff, no eye candy, no algorithm-gaming BS, no faces, and no "one simple trick" charlitanism. It's just hours and hours of all the things I wish someone could have shown me when I was first getting into electronic production decades ago, broken down into topical lessons.

This channel does a good job of taking the time to explain any music-vocabulary words they use in-context, as well as covering some theory concepts as-needed, but anyone who feels less-confident on that front should also check out:

David Bennett Piano

Despite having "piano" in the name, these are musical vocabulary & theory lessons that apply to any popular genre and any instrument.

There are a ton of theory-focused channels on YT (yay!), but the way David presents and illustrates each topic is (in my opinion) the best there is right now. Whereas more familiar faces like Rick Beato or Adam Neely are explaining things in a way that requires you already have a decent theory foundation (which is a fair assumption, given their audience), David makes no assumptions about your prior understanding, but get's through the topic at hand without wasting a ton of time re-explaining fundamentals.

Personally, I consume a few different theory channels that treat Hard Bop like a competitive sport, but when I want the clearest and cleanest way to explain a given concept, and illustrate it with examples people will recognize, I turn to David.

I have no chance to add a vintage toy piano ("grand piano Geoffrey Family Band" by Toys 'R' Us), because the only available pictures are on ebay, etsy, poshmark and pinterest. (https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/1347697462/1988-jeffrey-giraffe-toys-r-us-grand). This keyboard is played by Serge Locat (Harmonium) and it would be fun to add it.

I just watched the T'R'U piano solo in question, it's epic!

I agree this would be fun, but I just reviewed several of your submissions, and you know the world of music gear very well... if you're able to address some of the notes-formatting concerns I commented on in some of those earlier submissions, your score will be at 500 very shortly. Once you're at 500, you'll be able to add long-discontinued items to the database yourself.

For the good of the community, how about this: I'll review some more of your submissions, you'll make a few more submissions, your score will cross 500 points, and then you can add the T'R'U piano yourself with whatever photo you think works best?
