tb-303 clones, why I stopped grumbling and bought Uli's TD3 even though I don't need it
thanks for the detailed personal experience re: latency. I am not expecting miracles. I was only referring to apples to apples situations, meaning I suspect the MOTU M4 could provide me a lower total roundtrip latency before succumbing to glitches than other comparable interfaces.
now that you're syaing you might buy a 303 are you talking about spending the big bucks for a real one? I don't imagine they've gotten any less scarce and I doubt the 2020 shit show has dented their prices like more common vintage items.
Any money I sunk into a real one would ultimately be a reasonable investment. Original 303s will be worth well in excess of $10k within next 20 years... but I think I'd get my hands on a Behringer copy first and really get a feel for it. Given the extreme variances in old electronics, I'd never buy a 303 without first going hands on and seeing if it was a particularly good one... and I'm not yet qualified to make that determination.
...or I'd have to buy like 4 or 5 at a flippable price, then only keep the one I thought was best of the litter.

Glad to hear things have been smooth since the studio upgrade. Your praise for your MOTU interface has me looking at an M4 as my new mobile i/o box, instead of the SSL 2+. As a MIDI-obsessive, I've always been itching to give MOTU some money anyway. USB-C allows the M2/4 output something like 3.5 volts each direction for CV duties, which sounds far more adequate than what any DC coupled USB 2.0 could manage... plus the superior latency performance the M-series boxes are reported to have... which is the thing I'd probably get the most benefit from daily.

How is the TD3 treating you now that you've had it awhile?
I've been listening to a few 2020 releases with TB-303 and/or TB/TD-3/03... and so, for like the 80th time in my life, I want a 303... any further sync issues with your TD? will this thing stay in sync via MIDI, or do I have to get creative?

ok, maybe a nitpick-y example, lol... but sometimes I go back and re-read something a day later and it's like barely in english.

Sometimes, I make a comment on a submission, and I regret it the instant I make it. Like today's self-serving comment on a sighting of the gorgeous new H.E.R. signature strat:
I mean, give me a way to edit, and in 5 seconds I'd change that to "This pic really does this guitar justice!" or something that isn't... you know, about me. Why did I need to make this sighting about me somehow :🤦:
Anyway, this happens now and again. Getting a Mulligan on these comments would be great.

@carbinax... so which VST would you keep?
Honestly, since VSTs need a host/sequencer, and most DAWs include more than enough to make anything you want right out of the box, maybe the question is which DAW would you want to be stuck with if you could only use the internal/packaged sounds?

that's a thought.... a few years ago I had this idea for a post-hamilton techno musical...
ha! who/what would be the subject?

The title of this post had me excited. I read it as "I must glitch", in the way that Gene Kelly's just "gotta dance"...
...thought maybe you were suddenly possessed to bring back late 90s IDM...

👍🏼 Are you guys able to get BBC Sounds where you are(?)
Looks like there are no restrictions on streaming it here in California. Listening now. Thank you for the heads up. Turned on Radio 6 just now and it was streaming what sounds like a German language version of an old Slits track... so I'm loving it already.

I have noticed this... I feel like 2018 was last time I was able to put it on in the background while I work... but, it's kinda worth paying for and/or owning too.
the last time I remember it being on netflix was right after my son was born so like 2014.... but it probably was on other streaming services and I just was too distracted by a screaming wife and baby
Wow. Raising a 6 y/o solo in the middle of a pandemic... you should have your name on a plaque somewhere when this is all over. Is your son receptive at all to music instruction at this age? My nephew just turned 3, and his parents are using his basement play zone to house a hand me down hammond, accordion, and violin... neither of them play anything, but his uncle would put in the work if he ever takes an interest.
(and apologies to @mylittleeye for my role in this OT/hijack... there are no backchannels/DMs here... so this is kinda how it goes...)

no no, I meant ALL HE DID WAY FINGER DRU ON THE 909, like the amount of dedication to get that good at it is compeltely awe inspiring and this is from a guy who devoted 30 years to guitar.
sure, sure. the techno police would like a word with you... this will only take a minute...

yeah but.... but.... I swear that all that guy did was finger drum on the 909 for the last 30 years!
...but he is THE 909 fingerer. :)
When humans in the distant future search the global knowledge base for "909" (meaning they just think the phrase "909" then blink twice, I guess?) a holographic representation of Jeff Mills will appear in their retinas to give them a guided demo of what this metal box of buttons and wires could do.

per haps 909 refers to the pain and suffering caused by the lousy sampled hihats
Ha! I have often wished the closed an open hats on a 909 didn't share the same level knob and output socket... so much taming and sweetening to be done!.... but then there's Jeff Mills, doing all this with just a lousy Hosa cable plugged into the stereo output...

I'm often worried that teenage engineering is a weird cult and I'll never be able to give their products an objective review once the brainwashing takes hold...
If they weren't a cult, we wouldn't be talking about them right now.

The Shred-Guitar King Has Died
When Eddie was Tapping he would sometimes hold the Pick in his mouth, these Picks were made of Brass & Copper and ended up giving him Tounge Cancer (Not Throat Cancer which he died of later).
One would think all brass instrument players would be riddled with cancer if this metal could really have that kind of effect...

R: OP-1, my first hands on was an in-person demo from someone who had used and travelled with one for years... it was visibly worn... yet the # of key-clicks and shift-modes required to do/find anything was surprising... and this long-time owner still got lost a few times. It's a charming and involving object, and the OLED graphics are wonderful... but the fact that is seemed to require Elektron-like levels of shift-mode memorization to get around struck me as counter to its overall image/reputation of simplicity, approachability, and playful creative constraints. The reward for that memorization w/ Elektron gear is a ton of power/editability... but the functionality of the OP is intentionally constrained in comparison... I don't know... I'm sure my mind would be changed if I lived with one for a bit... everyone that actually owns one seems to love it.

Casio FZ Samplers: last of the hidden gems?
Add Joey Beltram to the list:
Can you talk about the Casio FZ-1, and what you did with it?
The FZ-1 had some of the absolute best sounding filters built into it. We modified the LFO and DCF during the recording using the slider. You can hear the “Mentasm” riff buzzing and snarling at you as the filter parameters changed. The slap delay on the changing frequency also made the filters stand out even more. The monster low pass frequency you hear during the drop in “Mentasm” was also the FZ-1 cutoff filter. Its capabilities fit this project perfectly. Awesome sampler.

I'm looking to buy a Juno 6, not 60, 6.... USA 110-120v wall voltage
gotta find stuff to do... actually a close friend of mine from my dad's generation and I are thinking of starting a gear show. This is a guy who did live sound for the stones, Lou Reed... worked for Todd Rundgren, Hall & Oates so if we do it we'll be asking these people to come on and talk gear.
I'm your first subscriber right here. Do it.

its given my jp6 envy and I'm shopping for one.... casually LOL maybe next year, but all your talk about it and my hard on fir this juno that really turned out to be valid gear lust makes me think JUPITER6
if you love the Juno 6 and want to double down on that, you darn well know the next step is the JP8... sell a BUNCH of synths, and go for the king. I only ended up with this JP6 because of that guy I traded with for the TR-727... he had this JP6 stashed away, and he let me play it while we were BSing post-trade and discussing gear... no hard sell, he knew all that needed to happen was for me to play it. Sure enough, a week later I call him to confirm that he showed me the JP6 because he was interested in moving the JP6, and he wanted to keep trading, so I drove a bunch of gear to his house, and we agreed on a Japanese market SH-2 and $1k cash for the 6 (this was like a decade ago)... this is one of the things I love about LA, this town loves high-end 80s gear nearly as much as it loves cars... epic studios go bust or downsize, and that gear often ends up on the streets with us common folk. I'm sure you see some of these kind of studio remnants on Philly CL too.
...anyway, you were mentioning the lack of space... why not go all-in, and roll a bunch of stuff into a Jupiter worth more than most ppl's cars?

.... weird... I'm really spending some time and they sound AWFUL together! The roland sounds thin and overly precisenext to the Korg and the Korg sounds muddy and sloppy aginst the roland! They make eachotehr sound mediocre but played individually the magic is SO there for both.
Maybe the Roland makes the Korg sound sloppy, because the Korg is sloppy? ;)

That's right! totally forgot they finally got to release something under their own name, more than 10 years after the Beastie Boys convinced them to surrender their debut album so that Mike D and crew could rap over it and release it as Paul's Boutique.

If I have to use this one VST to make drum sounds too, and it can't be a rompler or sampler... I'd go FM8.
The best subtractive-synthesis VST drums I've heard are the TR-clone modules that ship with Maschine... and Maschine is disqualified... so no VA drums for me.
I can download 37 years of DX/TX patches to keep the inspiration going
I'd finally get really good at Yamaha FM programming
I would be forced to make stuff that doesn't sound like anyone else

dead clean, needs the volume pot and few faders cleaned but once its warm they're fine. Sounds like it should. Spanky, plucky, focused. Arpeggiator with dual filter sweeps is instant stranger things. Its not anything like the mks30 or mks50. Where have you been all my life? I forgot how sweet this synth was. Not getting rid of the poly6. But ooh.
glad yours is solid. the 6/60 really is a thing of beauty, sonically. Everyone on the internet raves about them, but it's completely justified.

Congratulations! I'm excited to try this out, but.... oy I have so much cleaning to do in my studio area now, so much... I just tell people "don't look over there, with all the keyboards"... and generally, they don't. 。‿。

And on the flip side, we have production duo the Dust Brothers, for whom 99% of the gear spotting available is for them as a production team, not as individuals... like Daft Punk, these two are best served by a single-artist entry... but when I try to add one, EB tells me they are already added as a band, and I'm blocked.
What's the best path forward for the duo that brought us Paul's Boutique and Odelay?

Anyone have the new SSL2/2+ yet?
okay, you definitely want to have things adjusted in your DAW and also NOT be clipping the converters, your ears will tell you.
I think what's going on with my 1640i, now that I'm finally asking it to record and not just playback, is something else. As discussed elsewhere 1 2 3
I'm not a veteran studio engineer, but I've been recording to hard disk via interfaces (with and without mixers in the chain) since the 90s... this Mackie does not align with all those years of expectations set by other devices... in a bad way. I'll borrow a few interfaces from friends (how do i only have 1 interface now, after years of feeling like I had boxes of them?) and figure out how to put my frustration with this aspect of the 1640i into actual words that make sense to studio-forged LUFS-literate folks like yourself.
Anyway, sorry to hear the headphone out on the 2+ isn't as good as a rack device, but as you point out, nothing that is USB-powered is going to be able to be able to fully compete with a higher-end product that has it's own path straight to a wall outlet. There are engineering compromises that must be made, so nothing your describing is that shocking... but the high-LOD notes are very much appreciated.

Anyone have the new SSL2/2+ yet?
Dumbass question: So when you're pushing the preamps on the SL2+ hard, and its meters are showing you're out of headroom in the analog domain, does it still bring the audio into your DAW @ -18db like my Mackie 1640i*** does? Good/logical A2D engineering practices and technical considerations are one thing, but, practically speaking, not being able to really see the waveform in Ableton Live until I manually add +18db to each clip is a bummer... I'm sure if I was multi tracking a full live performance with the 1640i, and then cleaning up in PT, the small waveforms would be a non-issue with no bearing on ultimate quality of my recording once I've mixed... but... I wanna see my waveforms right away.
***I ask because your EB shows you're housing a 1640i as well.

Can anyone confirm this obscure 70s bass?
Thanks Jim! The next time someone really wants to know what bass was used to record "Cavern", AKA the source of the famous "White Lines" bass line, Google will finally have someplace to take them. This makes me happy.

Anyone have the new SSL2/2+ yet?
I mean to say SSL preamps like most british preamps, sound great run into clipping or close to it. Its a bath of harmonic goo up to a nice broadband fuzz. Working the 2+ too hard in 4k mode definitely adds some great color at the front end, assuming you're sure that's right for your song.
10-4.
I would never have imagined something this price range to have desirable characteristics when pushed... figured it was either "clean enough" or "hot garbage"... nice to hear.
6yalmost 6 years ago
In my early EB fumbling, I made this 90s production team an Artist instead of (more correctly/functionally) a Band... is there a way to convert this entry to a Band, or should I just re-add a Band entry?... or just forget about it either way because nobody cares about early 90s jungle other than me? :D
6yalmost 6 years ago
Anyone have the new SSL2/2+ yet?
on the serious side man, I've not tried the wall-wart pwoered scarlets so I can't say if they outperform the bus powered SSL headroom-wise but the SSL's mic amps want to run out of headroom :-) You'll put 4k legacy on and forget there's another option.
Is there maybe a typo in there, or is running out of headroom suddenly a good thing?
