Anthony Kiedis' Gear
his is the vocal mic, then known as simply the SM7, that Bruce Swedien used to record Michael Jackson's vocals on Thriller, the best-selling album of all time and it's a favorite of Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers as well.
"Anthony always used an SM57 for his lead vocals. We put it on a stand, but I'm sure he held it in his hand, and leant on it and swallowed it. That's how he gets his sound, but it meant that it was important to compress him, in order to protect the tape."
Anthony Kiedis is seen playing a Martin 0-15 guitar during an AOL session, as captured in a user-uploaded photo on Anthonykiedis.net.
Dave Rat FOH Engenieer Says: His interpretation begins with Audix OM7 dynamic microphones on all vocals, Rat's choice for several years. “The OM7 mic element is very close to the grille, so they tend to get quite loud, but with excellent gain before feedback,” he explains. “More importantly, they provide a real up-close-and-personal signature — very intimate. I don't want much sound from the room getting into the mics because the audience loses that proximity, that intimacy. And having the main P.A. feedback with an OM7 is hard to do.”
In this photo, Kiedis is seen with Gibson Les Paul SG Custom.
It can be heard in the video below at 1:45 and 2:10.
Anthony used this during live versions of Give it Away during the mid nineties.
He played this during the One Hot Minute tour.
